January Art Roundup

I haven't done one of these in a while, so here are some of my recent favorites in the geeky art world:

I know Christmas is over, but this Rockwell-inspired art tweeted by DeathStarPR made me grin like a scruffy-looking nerf herder:

Ha! This went viral before Christmas, so I had a heckuva time tracking down the artist. Persistence finally paid off, though: It's by Kevin R. Adams, although his website seems to be down right now.

Amy Mebberson - who you may know from her super popular Pocket Princesses - tweeted this in-progress sketch of an extra adorable Minnie Mouse:

Those little hair curls slay me. :)

Cuddly Rigor Mortis (aka Kristin Tercek) ran a sale for New Year's, so I finally bought a print of her "Make Like A Banana" that I've been eying for the past year:

(This one's sold out right now, but check Kristin's shop for more goodies. Most of her prints are $25.)

The original was on a wood plaque, so I'm planning to use my jigsaw to cut a piece of wood to match the same shape on the print, and then trim it to fit. If that makes any sense.

Oh, and Kristin just did a show at Disneyland's Wonderground gallery last month, and I am positively DROOLING over her Oswald piece:

LOVE.

Sadly these prints are only available at the gallery, though, so I may have to sweet-talk one of you California readers into doing me a solid. [Bambi eyes]

Now, who wants to see a steampunk Batgirl done Art Nouveau style?!
You know, besides me.

Steampunk Batgirl Nouveau, by Luca Maresca

This appears to be part of a set of prints, but I couldn't find any purchasing information. If you speak Italian, hit the link and see if you can find something I couldn't with Google Translate. (And then let me know in the comments if you do!)

[UPDATE: according to a few of you, this *was* part of a set which has completely sold out. Drat. However, Amy found Maresca's art blog, so you can see more of his work there!]

And because we can never have too much Art Nouveau - or too much Labyrinth:

She reminds me of the Babe.

DA member kishokahime has a whole gallery of 80s inspired Nouveau prints like these, and they're all fabulous. She also JUST set up an online store so we can buy prints, which start around $15. If I can just find a free wall in my office, I'll also be wanting these three:

Isn't Lili fantastic? Seriously, we just don't see enough Legend art these days.

I recently discovered Sara Richard's work, and I'm loving her soft, swirly style:

She's also done some fantastic Doctor Who and Rocketeer pieces, though sadly I don't see any of those in her online store.

Jerrod Maryumaya, who ought to be dubbed The King of Cute, made this fantastic Penguin:

Jerrod has a store here, but again, there's no sign of Penguin over there.

(I'm guessing it's a licensing thing, but then, that's something that has always confused me with artists, since so many of them DO sell fan art without official permissions. I've had pro artists try to explain it to me in the past, but it always leaves my head spinning. So moving on...)

Stephanie Buscema's Beetlejuice print makes me want to design a whole nursery around it:

Of course, I'm not having any kids, so...any volunteers? STEP RIGHT UP! (Which, incidentally, is the name of this print.)

And finally, since I've managed to accumulate a lot of art over the years that I can either no longer fit on my walls or that never made it there to begin with, I've decided to start giving it away to you guys!

Here's how it'll work: I've made a new Pinterest board, which John has pain-stakingly filled with all the art I currently have to give away. Most are signed prints, but there are also a few original pieces in there. (There are also a few sets, which count as a single piece.) Take a look, and if you see something you want, just leave a comment on this post to enter.

I'll pick a winner at random sometime next week. If I pick your name, then you just tell me which piece of art you want. (No need to tell me now; just when you win.) Easy-peasy! And I'll ship anywhere, so you international peeps feel free to throw your hat in.

I plan to do these give-aways with every art post from now on, so expect them to happen roughly once a month. I'm hoping these will help give my favorite artists a little more exposure, and also help introduce more of you to the joys of great geek art. Plus it will clean out my office closet. See? Win-Win-WIN. ;)

Happy commenting!

The contest has closed, and the winner is: Toneea W. from Australia!

Congrats, Toneea, and please e-mail me to claim your art!

They were using a milder chemo but her tumor started to grow so she had a second brain surgery and seems to be doing great.

    ReplyDelete
  54. So awesome! My walls are bare. It's embarrassing, really.

    ReplyDelete
  55. It seems like these art pieces should be ceded to a geek girl, so I feel guilty trying to win. However, (HOWEVER!) I see a couple things my mom would love and I have to enter for her. Isn't that what a good son should do?

    ReplyDelete
  56. I'm usually just a lurker, albeit a faithful lurker. But I have to surface for this fabulous give-away. I love your art posts!

I'm heading to Disneyland at the end of the month if no one steps up before then. I'd be happy to pick something up for you and ship it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hey, Jen!

I'm actually IN Italy, so I thought I'd take a gander at the link that you posted about Luca Maresco. Wanted to let you know that he has his own blog. The link you posted was to a blog that posts stuff from different artists. Luca's blog address is: http://lucamaresca.blogspot.it/

He has an email address posted there where you can inquire about his art. (Apparently, he was at the comic convention in Lucca this fall and was selling some of his art there).

Another blog that you might be interested in is that of DraWers, which Luca Maresca has been included in. The address for this blog is: http://draw3rs.blogspot.it/

    Hope this helps!

    Ciao!

  121. My year of university Italian didn't help me tremendously in the search, but fluency in French enabled me to find what I THINK is the original source for the Steampunk Art Nouveau prints. I managed to find a YouTube channel for an illustrator and designer named Eleonora Dea Nanni. I think she might be your girl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cahxeAJmQ6k Everything else I found seemed to be in Italian, but Europeans tend to study English in schools, so I'm guessing you could contact her via YouTube (assuming it's her actual account) and either she or one of her followers would be able to respond in English. p.s. I don't remember if I replied or not, but I'm glad you enjoyed the mathematical Christmas tree link. Apologize to John for me. Next year's tree should be fun for him. ;)

    ReplyDelete

We LOVE collecting art. There's no such thing as not enough room for art. See? http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/523853_10151285274896617_572405025_n.jpg (Our goal is to completely fill this wall. And that doesn't count all the other pieces we have throughout the house.)

  157. Hi Jen, I’m a long time reader, but I don’t comment much.
I would be over the moon if I won one of your pieces of art!

And since I'm commenting, thanks for entertaining me with Cake Wrecks and inspiring me with Epbot. I tried to tell you that when I met you at a book signing, but I got tongue tied and said it all wrong. *blush*

  160. Hi Jen! You have so many beautiful pieces of art! I especially love the Fairy set by Meredith Dillman. I adore fae of all kinds and even got my brother to create a D&D-based fairy character for me to play with in his campaigns when I was a tiny geekling. The Beautiful Mermaid by Myka Jelina is also fabulous!

You have an enviable life (even taking into account those things you share about it that aren't at all pleasant) and I love reading about it in your blog.

Studying Art History in college I loved art nouveau more than any other style, so those prints of the 80's icons are absolutely amazing to me. I'd love them all in 3x5" cards framed as a set, wouldn't you? Especially if you could make/find a frame that can do them justice.

  161. I'd love any of the Myka Jelina or Jasmine Beckett-Griffith prints. Beautiful work!

In fact, I could offer a trade if you were interested :) I know you don't have room, but I have some pretty sweet art I've had for a long time I would be willing to send ya. I can get you a pic in an email shortly, even if you're not interested, I think you'll like looking at them :)

Sorry to break it to you but it does not look like any more will be printed. At least not according to the website. Ah well, that'll teach me for sitting here, debit card at the ready, itching to blow my tax refund on something artsy. Guess I am back to shopping for shoes again!:(
