Cats & Cricut Crafts

It's been less than a month since we put the cats on a diet, and I gotta say, I'm impressed. The girls are more playful, running around more, and shoving more things off the table in protest of this situation:

"Your glass of water is next."

All this extra energy is definitely fueling some extra sass:

She legit made eye contact while I was yelling at her, and did this:

OH NO SHE DID NOT

Eva is just as bad. I use the bathroom off our bedroom during the day, so she lies in wait outside the bedroom door and slips into the room after me... which means she then gets locked in the very room we're trying to keep her out of.

We keep them out because I got tired of bed sheets covered in cat hair. So of course I come back several hours later to find her lounging on my side of the bed.

Ah, ok, but this was cute: I know it's nothing new that cats like sinks, but I've never seen either of ours in a sink until this week, so, INDULGE ME:

Eva sashayed in while I was brushing my hair and just plopped down. D'aww. I'm telling you, dieting has made them BOLD. Why can't human diets do that? I had to give up milk and onion and garlic so my gut wouldn't self-destruct, and all *I* got in exchange was extra strength sarcasm.

Also now my sink is covered in black cat hair.

Dangit, Eva.

(She looks fierce but she's actually SUPER happy right there, mrowing loudly and purring.)

Here's Suki wrestling her favorite furry tail toy thing:

We weighed them, and both girls seem to have lost between half a pound and a whole pound. (We're not super exact with our measuring.) Best part, we don't have to wash Suki's nethers as often; I think maybe she can reach better now? YUSS.

(Sometimes I stop and think about the stuff I'm sharing with 10,000 strangers on the internet and think, wow. I am living the life.)

Next, because I can't write about only one thing in a post: here are some cute door decals John and I designed for friends a while back:

My favorite part is the D pad plus sign. I wish I could share the Cricut file, since we put this together from scratch, but the font isn't in Design space so it doesn't want to work, boo. Still, maybe this will give you some inspiration to design your own?

One more, remember the rainbow unicorn room we did last September? Now Ellie has a door decal to match:

We used some
color-shifting vinyl for this one, and OOOOOOOH:

It shifts from purple to green/teal to orangey pink:

Last thing, which again is completely unrelated, but that's how I roll here: I started playing Portal 2 again for my birthday, and I just need to geek out with someone over how amazing this game is. I'd forgotten so much of it, even though I've played it 2 or 3 times before. It's laugh-out-loud funny the whole way, filled with clever puzzles that make my brain work but in a low-stress way, and then the parts where you fly through the air make me go "WHEEEEE", which amuses John.

(Fun fan art by Atlas-White)

I love revisiting fandoms and losing myself all over again in their amazingness, although it always feels a little strange when it's an OLD fandom. So tell me, which games or shows or books did you fall in love with AFTER all the hype was over? Which bandwagons were you the last to jump on?  Tell me in the comments, so we can commiserate/flail together, haha.

Then go have an AMAZING weekend, because you've earned it.

Love ya.

  1. Have you seen Portal 2 Reloaded yet? It's a third party version that introduces TIME PORTALS.

    1. Thx for the heads up. From what I can tell that was a temporary glitch, but if anyone else is still having a problem please let me know!

    2. I use Firefox as well and I have had no trouble with your website (on mobile or computer) !

    3. I also always use Firefox - no probs here.

ALSO: I love everything about this post, Jen!

My slightly delayed fandom relates to the MCU - I only got into the Marvel movies around the time Phase 2 was already underway (so, like, five years after Phase 1 started). But once I got into it, oh my did I get into it! :)

  3. Modern anime. I had NO idea how good it had gotten. Sure I read manga... They're books...

    Now I am so hooked.

  4. My daughter recently got heavily into Homestuck, which is a sprawling webcomic from years back. Her enthusiasm peaked my interest, so I read it as well and also became a fan. She is obsessed and drawing fanart and writing fanfiction and had a birthday which was heavily Homestuck-themed. I loved it as well, of course, and I so love having this really talented creator in my house basically giving me more content! I also made her a Wayward Vagabond stuffy for her birthday, so she is beyond happy. So my advice to anyone who gets into a fandom waaaaay after it is popular is to find someone else you know and get them into it as well. Makes everything better!

  6. Your comment about flying in Portal 2 reminds me of when my daughter and I played Order of the Phoenix on our Wii. Whenever we made Harry run, we used to chant, "Run run run like a bullet from a gun. You can't catch me -- I'm the Chosen One!"

  7. I have like three or four episodes left of my first watch-thru of Psych. It’s so much fun!

    1. It IS so much fun! I grew up in the 80's so I especially love all the references. I still need to watch the last Psych movie on Peacock.

  8. I recently started watching Xena: Warrior Princess online, entirely because I found Xena and Gabrielle dolls at an antique store. It's surprising how well the storytelling holds out, because it was so progressive in its day.

Also, totally feel you on the cats-on-a-diet pain. Both my boys need diets, but only my panther girl is fine as-is. None of them approve.

  9. Obduction. It's a marvelous game from the original creators of MYST, and it came out in 2016, but I didn't have a system that would play it. We got better computer, found the game on Steam, and I just fell in love with it.

My house panther has been on a diet for several years, and it's keeping him at a good weight. He was originally a feral kitten, and so his response to being on a diet is to eat every scrap of food in sight as fast as he can as soon as it appears. And if he eats too much at once he hurls, so we have to split his food into four small meals a day. To listen to him whine about, you'd think we never feed him at all.

  10. Portal is TOTALLY my major fandom after the hype, hah. I've liked it for years already! But here's the thing: I would watch my Dad play it instead of playing it myself. That was one of our bonding activities. It wasn't until around 2016 that I tried playing it myself. I got stuck somewhere around chamber 15 and didn't pick it up again as that's when we had been dealing with losing a family member. Fast forward to last fall.

Some of my artist friends had put together a Discord server and made it Portal themed since it was a game that was mutually enjoyed by everyone. I joined. I played through Portal 1 and 2. Oh, and co-op mode? SO CUTEEEE. I discovered some mods. Have you played Portal Stories: Mel? It's my favorite mod! I also like Aperture Tag but it also kinda spooks me out. I haven't finished Portal Reloaded yet but so far so good! There's also another mod in the (very) early stages of development called Desolation. https://youtu.be/p3CGfizQZmE

I found the comic for Rattman. (cried a little, but who didn't?) I read Blue Sky. (and cried over Blue Sky as well.) I've drawn ship art of one of my friends with a Wheatley android several times. I've been introduced to so many more games, art styles, cosplays, and music from these friends. (it's like a mini FoE but for portal!) Did you know there was a MUSICAL about Portal 2?? It has two versions, 2015 and 2017. It's by GeekEnders on youtube. I recommend both, but 2015 is my favorite because of the way it portrays Cave and Caroline's relationship. The 2017 version included The Itch (lol yikes), Cave had a bowl cut, and the dynamic wasn't as good. It did, however, include Rattman, which the 2015 version did not.

I could keep talking all night about these things, haha. Oh, remember the time a few months ago when I played The Stanley Parable? My portal pals told me about that! Technically you did first, but after reading a friend's first playthrough, I really REALLY wanted to play it. And I like it! So, thanks are in order to you being geeky with so many things. It's been so encouraging. <3 <3 <3

  12. Your cats are no more bold or moody than before. But now that they are dieting, they have extra energy to express their feelings with. :-)

  13. I'm dealing with a cat with hyperthyroid that keeps losing weight...it's pretty stressful. Medicine on the ear she hates me for using and some days even that fails. Well, we'll try every brand of cat food on earth until she finds one she doesn't hate.If you haven't already, you should try grain free. My other cat almost completely stopped throwing up since I cut out grain and fish and that makes me ever so happy!

  14. I found myself looking for a show to watch a few months back, and I decided it was time to FINALLY see what all the Stargate hype was about. (I'd only ever seen the original movie before.) When I dove in, though, I decided I was going to watch EVERYTHING, and IN ORDER.

So, I watched the movie again, and now I'm in the final season of SG-1 as well as in Season 3 of Atlantis. (MOMOA!) I've been alternating episodes, since they were running concurrently. Once I finish SG-1, I'll watch "The Ark of Truth," then continue with Atlantis (watching Continuum after the Season 5 premiere), then Stargate Universe, finally wrapping up with flashbacks in Stargate Origins.

    And I'm absolutely loving it.

  15. Ah, the downside of floofy cat bums - "fringe". That is the code word in my house for when the Maine Coons have "extras" hanging off the butt area.

  17. We first watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend last year after Adam Schlesinger died (he was one of the main music guys for the show). And this year we're rewatching it. It's so good! The title makes it sound like some sort of generic dramedy but it's really funny, really creative, has *great* music and is also really honest about mental health. I recommend it to everyone.

(Though, minor spoilers - it does deal with some pretty serious mental health issues including suicidal ideation.)
