Jen Gems: Robin Hood Marries The Princess Bride, "Get Help," & Rainbow Llama Balloons!

Raise your hand if you never thought the best commercial ever would come from WALMART, of all places.

::slowly raises hand::

If you don't believe me (about the best commercial part, I mean), just watch this:

I'm also loving how they clearly paid top-dollar to have some genius film production place make this, then uploaded it to Youtube with the most understated title of all time: "Grocery Pickup - Famous Cars." Like whoever uploaded this had no idea what was happening, and so had to ask Kate, the office's resident geek, who spent 10 minutes excitedly explaining every single reference, but she overwhelmed the poor guy so badly that his only take-away was "famous cars." Boom. There 'tis.

I'm sure I've mentioned Riker Creatures here before, but her latest creation is especially squee-worthy:

Snuggle mode, ACTIVATE.

It's been ages since I featured a good geek wedding, so please tell me you've seen the marriage of Robin Hood & the Princess Bride (PUN INTENDED) over on Offbeat Bride. Somehow Kaitlyn & Blaise managed to be magical, elegant, and drop-dead hilarious all at the same time, so I am in awe.

::swoon::

Every wedding should have a kick line.

 Lanterns instead of flowers! And they're all wearing elf ears! I hope they came down the aisle singing like in LoTR. Hit the link up there to see the rest; so many pretties! And from the photos I'm pretty sure the bride & groom did the dance from the movie, yesss.

Over on the RPF's Facebook page, group member Zachariah convinced Tom Hiddleston to do "Get Help," and IT IS GLORIOUS:

I love it when celebs play along. Also now I need to watch Thor: Ragnorak for the 10th or 11th time.

If you're like me and STILL haven't gotten a new wall calendar for 2019, I just noticed ThinkGeek has a few left at 75% off, including this beauty:

It's a whopping $3.75 right now, not too shabby. They also have West World and a pretty Magic: The Gathering one left.

Oh hey, remember ages ago when I made a felt holster bag of Link's shield?

 I was never happy with my construction on this thing, but I liked the concept, at least.

So imagine my delight when Donovan of Once Upon A Workbench made a leather version, which is a million times better!

He even wrote an Instructable showing you how to make your own! Go see!

And finally, for some rainbowlicious eye candy, I just discovered Creative Heart Studio on IG. This Miami mom does the most INCREDIBLE things with... balloons?
Yes, BALLOONS.

Lilly calls them "balloon mosaics," and I am blown away. (Sorry/not sorry.) Can you imagine the amount of work that goes into these? I used to make simple balloon animals back when I was a clown, and just the thought of knotting this many balloons is making my fingers hurt, ha. Anyway, Lilly's creations are pure whimsy and sweetness, and her whole feed is a happy candyland of joy, so go give her a follow. (Uh-oh, and she sells templates so you can make your own?! Yikes, this could get dangerous.)

I hope you're finding plenty of your own smiles this week, gang. How's January treating you so far? I'm still floundering a little, to be honest, trying to figure out what I want to focus on, then finding the energy to do it. I'm not pushing myself too hard, though; I've decided January is just the practice round of 2019, and we start for real in February. Any seconds to this motion? ;)

Psst. If you like this post, or Epbot, or me, or John, or our cats, then please consider clicking through our Amazon links when you shop! It costs you nothing, and helps pay a few bills 'round here: USA, UK, Canada.  Thanks, gang!

  1. Is there any way to tell if you are getting the link benefits from someone? I bookmarked your link and use it when I shop on amazon, but have now way of knowing if it is routing to you correctly.

    1. According to John we can see order summaries, but no personal info like names. So we have to take it on trust that the links are working, ha. And thank you so much for using them! As ads continue to pay less and less, that's picking up a lot more of the financial slack.

    2. Amazon does show me how much my orders have contributed, but I've been doing it for a while and it only started recently (for a non-profit I volunteer with, sorry guys, but that $9 for the last five years...) It shows "Supporting:..." underneath the search box on Amazon's page.

  2. I seriously needed to see those wedding pictures. So awesome! The cake-cutting one? People like that are my favorite kind of people. :) Thanks for sharing!

  4. "I hate 'get help.' It's humiliating." Apparently Loki has great respect for his fans!

  5. I like how the bridesmaids got to chose their own necklines and don’t match perfectly!
    I’m totally going to follow Creative Heart Studio now. Thanks for letting us know about her!

  6. I like your practice round idea. The first week or so hasn't gone well, but it's just practice for the real thing!

  7. I like the practice round! I shall second, or third, or fourth it, whatever place I happen to fall...

    My goal is to get my craft "room" organized. In quotations since it is currently a "shove it all in and hope for the best" room where things get placed when hubs cleans and doesn't know where something goes, the laundry holding room, the "put things here while you do a bathroom renovation" room, the it belongs to mom room, etc... I can almost see the inside of the closet! That's my practice for purging things and cleaning/organizing the entire house by mid-year. Then, ideally, we sell our house, buy a new one, and do it all over again!

  8. Those balloon creations are amazing!

  9. Subtle bit of extra awesome homage in the Walmart ad: at the end a red and white vintage Pickup pulls in. That seems to be Sam Walton’s old truck! He never drove anything more expensive than that!

  10. That Walmart commercial is outstanding! Love it!
    I love the Princess Bride/Robin Hood Men in Tights wedding. So creative! I just don't understand the elf ears...they don't go with either movie. Maybe just something else they like and wanted to add? Either way, it's an amazing wedding!!

  11. I had only seen the short version of the Walmart commercial on TV, thank you so much for sharing the whole thing! BRB, off to share it with my geeky friends...
    January is definitely a practice round. I, too, am trying to refind the house and particularly my craft room/office. Complicated by my husband working from home FULL TIME as of the beginning of the year - I'm not used to having someone else in the house during the week day, and it's making me super self-conscious on days I don't have many spoons.
