Pretty Lily In A Stained Glass Sunbeam

Even when it's a good 80 degrees inside the house (yay Florida), our cats still seek out sunbeams to sleep in. I spotted Lily in the little patch of light under our fake stained glassed doors the other day, and it was so lovely I had to take a picture or ten:

And then, inevitably, from the shadows:

Attack of the Ninja Tonks!

And by "attack," I mean "slow-motion-batting until Lily gets huffy and stalks off." ;)

(I love how Tonks' bright orange bow tie gives her away. Ha!)

For those of you in the Lily Fan Club: she's doing great, but still won't let that darned spot on her back heal completely. Most days it's just a little raw, so we keep an eye on it and stick her in the onesie on the rare occasions she makes it bleed. The other week it was almost completely better - fur growing back and everything - and then she went and over-groomed 'til it scabbed again. Arg. CATS, amirite?

Ok, time to announce this month's art winners! So congratulations to:

Nicole S., who wins the Batman "Don't Look Back" print

Bethany Luther, who wins the Avengers one, and

Lisa Howard, who gets her choice from the Pinterest Give-Away Board!

Congrats again, ladies, and please e-mail me your mailing addresses!

  1. Those are gorgeous pictures! My favorites are the last two. Lily's over-grooming sounds so frustrating! We had a similar yet less severe case with a lovely cat named Misha at the rescue I work with. Whenever we put her in the kennels so people could meet her and see how lovely she is (she was SO sweet!) she'd scratch her ears bloody. So she stayed in foster care and no one saw her, which meant no one wanted her, and we ended up keeping her for about 2 (?) years before she finally got adopted a couple weeks back! I think every volunteer dropped their phone and did a happy dance when that text went out! I hope your kitty gets a happy ending too :)

  2. Is it wrong that the last picture is my favorite? I still love the faux stained glass you guys did. If I had the right trim around my glass doors, I'd go for it, but that sort of treatment doesn't look so hot with aluminum sliders.

@Jessi, great news about Misha! I'm fostering a mom and 6 kittens right now and having a blast with them.

  3. Awww, lovely Lily! And Tonks purposely annoying her is too funny. Just like any two sisters, really.

    Beautiful photos, Jen!

Any chance you're coming down to see Jenny Lawson in Miami this Saturday night?

Any Epboteers or Wreckies going? I'm going to be alone, and it would be more fun and less scary to have someone to sit with.

    1. Aw, now I wish I WAS going! Saturday is Dapper Day at Disney, though, so John and I will be over there taking pics. Be sure to give Jenny some love for me! (And I hope some other Epbot peeps are there, too, but even if not: you'll still be with your tribe.)

  4. Like people, our cats are imperfect. We have one with a heart condition and food sensitivities, so we have to spend a fortune on meds and special food and clean up puke all the time. But it's so worth it when he snuggles up to you.

  5. Cats are solar powered after all. ;)

  6. Aww what a sweet kitty 💖 my pup does the same thing. He loves to lay in the sunbeams!

  7. Have you ever tried Lansinoh on her spot? Won't hurt her if she licks it, and it is used on nursing moms' nipples when they get raw.

    1. No, I hadn't heard of that! Off to look it up - thanks!

    2. I second this suggestion. I used to work with children with special needs and one child repeatedly sucked his fingers until they were raw and we started applying lansioh a few times a day and helped to heal his hand without worrying about the risk when he licked the lansinoh.

    3. Woah! Cool idea! Totally have used that (for intended purposes) and it's good stuff. Very nice and soothing.

  8. I swear with each photo I imagined you telling her now look natural. That's it! Now precocious... a little more... Yes!! Slightly annoyed with half closed eyes... the camera is loving you! Now look away.... forlorn! I need forlorn!!! You just can't quite seem to find that perfect sunbeam.... push yourself! I need forlorn!!!

    I love your cats.

  9. I love that last post of the two kitties together. They're such adorable fur-babies!

  10. Lilly says, "I'm so pretty. You may take my picture." And Jen says, "Work it, Lilly! Yeah, baby! Give me that look! Right there - perfect!"
Thanks for those pics -- they are fun. And thanks for the Lilly update.

  12. Kitties!! So cute. My cats will lay in the sun until they are hot to the touch. It's funny. When I come home, I can tell who had the sun spot by how hot she is.

  13. Lily is so pretty. One of our cats, Ginny, randomly goes through phases where she pulls all her hair out near her tail. No one has ever been able to come up with a reason why.

  14. Well of course Tonks came to attack. You were giving Lily too much attention, mama!

Our pets always did that if one was getting more attention than the other. Jealousy is strong with this one.

  15. Omigoodness! I am so excited I finally won!! Yay!!

    Thanks!
And btw- Lily is the cutest kitty ever!!! :)

  16. It's the strangest thing... ever since I've been following your blog (believe me, it's been awhile), I've slowly grown accustomed to the adorableness of cats. And my dislike for them seems to be dwindling.

    JEN! What have you done??

  17. I love your kitty pics! I'm too allergic to have furry pets of my own, so I enjoy your pics and pet the neighbor's cat, Caesar. He has adopted me and is very talkative. It's fun to have a kitty-buddy! I wish I were home sleeping in a sunbeam right now! --Jodi

  18. My grandfather was a blacksmith back in the day, and he said that even in the worst of summer the shop cat would lay as close to the forge as it could safely get and soak up the heat. I especially enjoy seeing photos of your Lily and Tonks, this is the first time in my adult life that I don't have a cat friend. Our Puck and Sophie, rescued together as kittens, both died in the last 18 months, at ages 18 and 19. There will be a another kitten some day, and sooner rather than later. We already have a gee-whiz new electric cat box waiting for him/her. But the right cat doesn't come along just every day, you know?

  19. This is not related to your cute Kitties... I love the stained glass door hack!
It looks like you have an aluminum door jam. We have the same door jam and we sprayed painted it with rustoleum (we used oil rubbed bronze to match our door handles) and it turned out fantastic! We've had it sprayed for 3 years and only had to do minor touch ups. I think your door jam looks fine, but it was such a huge improvement for our door that I thought I'd pass it along the tip.

    1. You know, that's an excellent idea. After we installed the new floor & threshold, it never occurred to me, but you're right: a darker color would be SO much better. Thanks!

    2. I second this! When we took up our carpet and restored our hardwood, the floor vents looked wrong against the natural red oak, and of course with an older house they're an odd size that is only available special order at insane prices. I hit them with the same oil rubbed bronze spray paint and they look great. Obviously they have less traffic than a threshold would have, but the roomba hasn't made so much as a scratch, and even the one by the front door that gets the most traffic (including dirty salty boots dropped on it all winter) has yet to need touching up.

    3. We used the same spray on some shiny brass faucets and drain stoppers in our kids bathroom too that have held up well so far too.

  23. Love these photos! I have taken a million pictures of our two sunning themselves because they always look so blissed out. I envy their lack of ambition. :)
I just finished Jenny Lawson's new book. I started it on a plane and was laughing so hard, people were staring at me. If you haven't read "Furiously Happy" yet, you're in for a treat. (Thanks for the tip a couple of weeks ago--and then my niece told me I HAD to read it. You were both right!)
