Lady Vadore Goes Chibi!

My family doesn't really give Christmas gifts anymore since we're all adults now, but I still have a Christmas haul to show off! Check out all the stuff in my PO Box last week:

Yep, several of you sent me cards and homemade gifts! Pamela made the jewelry using nail polish (orange and teal!), Sophie of GeekMom made me the Ghostbusters cross stitch, the "Venkman is my spirit animal"magnet is from Sarah, and Heather sent over a few steampunk charms I forgot to include. There were also a few other cards, although the Wibbly Wobbly TARDIS from little Claire & Eleanor was the geeky champion. :)

Then, on Christmas Eve Erin N. e-mailed me some of her artwork, saying I might recognize the character:

"Come to the Chibi side. We have cute."

[gratuitous Kermit flailing] AIIEEEE!!

It's no exaggeration to say this made my whole Christmas Eve, so I just had to share. Look at all the details! The feather epaulettes! The pin-hole lights on the cane! THE EYELASHES ON THE GOGGLES!

Erin didn't actually call this a Chibi Lady Vadore, but that's what came to mind when I first saw her. You can check out more of Erin's work over on DeviantArt, although I don't see this piece there yet. Maybe if you ask her nicely? [Update: A-ha! She's added it now!]

Which reminds me: Victoria G., who made my very first Lady Vadore fan art, has added it to her DA account, so you can see that here, and even buy a print if you're so inclined.

So now I have a Lady Vadore Art set! I'm going to try to get them both framed and hung in my office this weekend. And just for the record, you guys are NOT helping my ego - but I'll try to remember I can't force-choke any of my enemies, just the same. ;)

Ok, those of you who also got Christmas or Hanukkah gifts: what was your favorite? How many of you got crafting tools and/or Dremels? Eh? [eyebrow waggle] Any corsets or geeky jewelry? How about video games? Details, people: I NEED DETAILS.

PS - I'm playing Deathspank: The Baconing this weekend. It's hilarious and awesome. Especially since you can set the level to Mega Wimp so you don't die all the time and get frustrated and throw your wireless controller across the room. Not that *I* would EVER...

  1. I got a LC Smith Superspeed Typewriter from 1937. Somehow, it still works.

  2. Love the TARDIS card! My birthday happens to be the 21st, and one of my friends made me a necklace with a pendant that says "create and imagine" in Galifrey (correct spelling?)! Nerdy friends ftw!

  3. What a great haul! That chibi Lady Vadore is extremely cute. :)

I can't say my Channukah gifts were quite as geeky, but one friend did make me a super cute octopus plushie. It even came with a small knitted winter hat and scarf! And another friend got me some Superboy comic books, as well as black lipstick - perfect for the cosplay I'm working on.

  4. I received several geeky gifts for Christmas: Assassins Creed 3, and Brave an The Dark Knight Trilogy on Bluray. My niece gave me a set of Star Wars glasses. I think that was my favorite gift of all. ;)

  5. My daughter got for Christmas (and her birthday which was yesterday) a plushie Adipose, a plushie Talking Dalek, Doctor Who monopoly, two TARDIS mugs, a TARDIS teapot, a TARDIS cookie jar, a t-shirt with a Dalek making coffee ("CAFFEINATE"), three pairs of earrings (TARDIS, sonic screwdriver, and weeping angels), a framed photo of the 11th Doctor and a ticket to the Doctor Who Symphony Spectacular at the Sydney Opera House. I guess all of her friends and family know how much of a Whovian she is!!

  6. Chibi Vadore is Vadorable!

I didn't get anything crafty this year, but my wife got a dremel from my mom. (I know, what's up with that? My own mom!) It's still in the box. I give it one more week before I break into it for her.

  7. My son got a plushie talking R2D2 & Star Wars T-Shirt (he's 7 months old). It goes perfectly with the Star Wars Lego planets we have decorating our Christmas tree ;-)

  8. Our friend bought himself a professional-quality photo printer a while back... For Christmas he surprised us with a beautifully matted and framed picture of my husband and I kissing in front of the "Unconditional Surrender" statue in San Diego with the USS Midway in the background. He took the photo of us over 2 years ago. I'm a history geek, especially WWII. I nearly cried, so sweet, so thoughtful.

  9. My big gift was a hammered dulcimer that my dad made for me. I've had it since September, though. He also made me a couple of cute puzzles. My TV-related geekery was Bert the farting hippo from NCIS and my 2013 wall calendar featuring The Hobbit movie.

Have you seen the new trend of making a charm out of a scrabble tile? A local artisan makes them with all kinds of themes and my running coach got me one based on the "keep calm and carry on" meme. Mine says "Get Excited and Make Things".

  10. Love your new artwork! I got a nice new rotary cutter and self healing mat that I'm really excited for

  11. I was thrilled people indulged my nerdy-ness this year. I got the Muppet Movie, Persepolis, Iron Man (two disks!). In my teen years I was kind of obsessed with Whose Line Is It Anyway? and to my total joy my Dad got me the first season of it.

Also my Brother and SIL gave me an autograph CD of my favoriet signer. I was pretty thrilled.

  12. I got the Girl Genius Squee Set perfume sampler from ZOMGsmells.com and fluffy black socks. I am finishing my niece's present (a satin lined book/box) today. (Question: When you make your penny buttons, do you heat the pennies before doming them?)_

  13. I received Book 3 of Buffy Season 8, a very awesome hardcover "Buffy The Making of a Slayer" which includes fantastic little side bits of papers from the show, AND The Book of Spells PS3 Move Bundle from my nephew.

    And tiger Footie pajamas. :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I got crochet books and hooks, and my mom gave me my pic of any of her yarn that would fit into a box. Also got the Ghostbuster game for PS3 (it's old but I still wanted it!).

  15. WELLLL Thanks to all your inspiration I asked for and GOT a Dremel for x-mas. The "stand" and all the extra attachments to follow in the new year as there was a shipping snaffu.

I did think my 18 yr old son's response to my gift was priceless he stopped the whole room when it said "Is it just me or is it weird that it is mom who asked for and got all the power tool instead of dad?" ~lol~

I am glad my husband is secure enough in his "man carrying card holding status" to not feel threatened by my gift list and to get me every single thing on it. (everything I wanted came from the hardware store this year).

I can't wait to get busy making all the stuff with my new Dremel, thanks for showing ladies everywhere that we too can have and use power tools without fear!

  16. Squee...I got the Time of Angels playset and Dalek Army set from Character Building. Lego-compatible Doctor Who minifigures. Now I have to start collecting for real!

  17. I LOVE the chibi Lady Vadore! So cute!

I didn't get anything particularly geeky myself (just knives and a Kindle), but we got our daughters the Lego Mindstorms robot. Best. Christmas. ever.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I got loads of Star Trek and Star Wars tshirts and Star Trek: TNG Pez dispensers, among other things. My favorite is a vaguely steampunkish bronze bracelet with a pewter Pug on it! Geeky meets snuggly and adorable!

  19. I got a tardis and dalek salt and pepper set, a tardis mug, a sonic screwdriver and a tardis case for my phone. Have been playing my skylanders for ipad that my daughter gave me. Plus i got alian/predator box set of the movies.

  20. We bought a new PS3 (the Epic Mickey 2 bundle) to replace mine that fried a year ago. So excited to really game the Epic Mickey and my Little big Planet games again. I also went Boxing day shopping for some movies to add to the ever-growing collection... still waiting on my Les Mis tickets

  21. The only thing Eleanor loves more than Doctor Who is bacon. Would you say The Baconing is appropriate for a 12 year old?

    ReplyDelete
  22. My hubby and son got me a sterling silver twisted wire necklace of a chocolate molecule. And the game "Cards Against Humanity"... which is hi-LARIOUS if you're not easily offended ;)

  23. No geeky gifts for me this year mostly because my family is very non-geek and would have no idea what a Tardis is or why dragons are so cool. Not to say I didn't get nice things, which I most certainly did, but I need to find some geeky friends to share the geek love.

I AM making a pair of Tardis blue earrings for a coworker though ;-)

  24. Hooooo leeeeee HELL...that Lady Vadore chibi is AWESOME!

  25. I got the Wii games Epic Mickey and Brave. I pulled out Brave today and beat the first level (after about four restarts... stupid puzzles). On the nerdier side, I got the Girl Genius book, both graphic novels of The Dreamer and Mouse Guard Winter! Those are probably the nerdiest gifts I got. I then read all of the Mouse Guard book that night. I also got lock charms for Steampunk jewelry/polymer clay projects! Can't wait to use them!

    ReplyDelete
  26. My family got me all seven seasons of Star Trek Voyager EEEK!! :D

  27. I received a super geeky gift. My sister and I have a joke about the Chloroform Penguins that hide in her closet. The knock her out to the point where its difficult to wake her up (she's a realllly deep sleeper). So she crocheted me my very own Chloroform Penguin... complete with scarf, hat and gas mask. Did I mention that he has scent beads inside him? He smells like vanilla.

  28. The Lady Vadore art is awesome, as is the rest of your geeky haul!

I got some video games, which make me super happy... the Orange Box (Portal, Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2) from my sister and Portal 2 from my mom. I've already played Portal 2, but really wanted my own copy, and have wanted the rest for a long time now, so I'm plenty happy!

I also gave some geeky gifts, the best of which was probably a pair of socks for my sister that look like the 4th Doctor's scarf. (She also got a TARDIS bath towel from our mom.)

    ReplyDelete
  29. My husband got the Dremel stand (like you have) and the Dremel Trio. I'll probably be using it as much as he will, hehe.

I got a HUGE stack of books to add to my large costume research collection, one of them was the newest Downton Abbey book (plus the dvd sets of both series 1 & 2). And I actually got my husband to watch Downton with me (3 day marathon!) - now he is totally hooked and more impatient than I am for series 3 to start airing.

I've got a lot of reading to do and lots of sewing inspiration for 2013! Some will definitely be geeky. =)

  30. I got my brother to get me a Dremel 4000 kit for Christmas. It'll be broken in making things for my Steampunk wedding (yes, I will send pictures). And in your opinion, hat or no hat? I can't decide.

    ReplyDelete
  31. For nerdy gifts, I received the mini replica of the Portal 2 gun (it was on my list, but I don't think my family quite understood it). One of my friends also bought me the Mass Effect Trilogy so that I have all the games again. Other than those, I got a lot of gift cards and coffee. Corsets will be sometime later.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Everything I got (and gave, actually), was nerdy except a pair of socks! What more could you ask for? XD

Would have spoiled the fun if I straight-up said she was chibi now, wouldn't it? ;) So glad you like her (she's up now, btw).

  33. My sister-in-law knitted me a Tom Baker Doctor Who scarf for Christmas! Even though she's never seen the show, she knows how much I love it, so she researched and spent about 30 hours knitting me this scarf. Needless to say, I love it! And, I think she deserves to be nominated for a sister-in-law of the year award!

  34. Its all so cute! I hope you had happy holidays! c: I got a dremel and a light table for christmas. c:

  35. I got an OTTLite for Christmas from my husband for my crafting area, which already included a light table that my husband modded for me (he took a computer cart, and put in a frame for the glass, as well as a dimmer switch for the lights underneath). The light table is here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=328629.0 Honestly, I don't need a light table very often, but when I need one, it's indispensable.

  36. @ Emily - The DeathSpank games are pretty irreverent, but I don't *think* there's anything too inappropriate for a pre-teen. There's no language or sex or anything; just jokes about thongs. Heh. Of course, I'm only about 20% through The Baconing so far, so you may want to check the rating to be sure.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @ Betty G - Oooh, what do you think of that Girl Genius perfume sampler? I'm always hesitant to buy things online I can't smell ahead of time. :) And for the pennies: no, you don't have to heat them. Just whack away on your doming block, and you're good to go!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love the TARDIS card! I got a record player on which I can now play my original Star Wars Soundtrack 45's, the Doctor Who Season 7 DVD, and all of John Green's books, two of which were signed. It was quite the geeky Christmas :D

    ReplyDelete
  39. Aah! Chibi Lady Vadore! She is Va-dorable! (womp womp)

My family is well-versed in many dialects of Geek, so we typically have rather Geeky holidays. My haul this year included the Parasol Protectorate box set (which I have yet to read), along with Vols. 1 & 2 of the manga.

I was also pleasantly surprised – but mostly surprised - to open up these steampunky heels from my parents. I'm pretty much a converse-n-stompy-boots kinda gal, so these are going to be fun to create an outfit around. (And not break anything while wearing them! ;))

Oh, and I bought my husband this There's Nothing Strange in Your Neighborhood shirt from Threadless, which has brought us both much joy and amusement :D

  40. Ohmygosh WANT the little chibi Lady Vadore! How absolutely adorable!

None of my gifts were super geeky--but the ones I loved most were my brand new daughter (really, you can't get more cute than that) and my parents surprising me with a new camera to replace the one that was lost/stolen (we still don't know which) at the airport earlier this year.

My favorite gift to give was finding a Green Lantern for my brother (he exclaimed and smiled like a baffoon for the next several hours).

Glad your Christmas was so happy!

  41. On the nerdy end, I got a Schrödinger’s Cat decision maker (so awesome) and a tardis blue jewellery box, both from my amazing fellow (I got him a tardis art print and a dalek mug).
On the crafty side, I got a rotary cutter and mat (now I can quilt and make bias tape without ripping my hair out, woo!), and money that I partially put towards supplies for attempting to make making comic book jewellery and wallets.
And my mom got me a super fluffy petticoat!

    ReplyDelete
  42. The Dremel. It happened. And it is so good.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I didn't get anything particularly crafty or nerdy, but I did get a snazzy new DSLR (a Nikon D3100, to be precise) which I have wanted for quite a while. Needless to say, I have been a bit shutter-happy the last couple of days. :D

LOVE the fan art. The Chibi Lady Vadore is beyond cute. :)

  44. My husband got a dremel and I got a 3DSXL. which means I now posses a gameboy micro, a DS lite, a DSi XL and a 3DS. And I am the non gamer in the house.

    ReplyDelete
  45. My two favorite gifts were season 1 of The Big Bang Theory and a KitchenAid mixer.

    ReplyDelete
  46. By far the best Hanukkah gift I got was the tea-rex tea infuser! I just about fell over when I saw it! :) Now to find some loose-leaf tea...

    ReplyDelete
  47. I got a Cricut machine, which I now must figure out how to use. My fave gifts, tho, are my sonic screwdriver and my TARDIS keychain flashlight. My son used his one Santa gift request to ask for his own sonic screwdriver, which he got. (Go Santa!) Then, for his birthday yesterday, he asked for a TARDIS cake. I was happy to create one for him. Too bad it wasn't bigger on the inside, but at least it was full of cake! ;-)
So many people posting here got Doctor Who items; thank you for supplying my wish lists for several holidays to come! I had no idea there was so much fun stuff out there, heehee.

  48. I had an amazing Christmas! My husband bought me a Dremel- which he said he felt weird buying me because it's a power tool, but I begged so nicely. :) Also, my bff made me a Doctor Who shirt & a necklace that has my name in morse code! Talk about awesome!

  49. I got a Dremel for Christmas!! So very excited to use it. I also got a ukulele, so that's exciting.

  50. my brother made me a very nice and geeky/crafty present: ironing beads *yay* now i can immerse in pvc-rainbow-plastique thingies and create my favourite 8-bit characters (coincidentally my recent favourite pc-game is minecraft (lego with bits and bytes ;))

    ReplyDelete
  51. I got a pair of fuzzy socks and a custom-made jump drive. :D Mr. Haiku waits for the lost-and-found rummage sale at the local university, and then buys up lots of abandoned jumpdrives for about a dollar a piece. He wipes off the data, cracks open the cases, and dips them in various protective plastics and epoxies. Without the bulky factory cases, the jump drives are much smaller. Then he etched our initials on one side of my jump drive and a gecko he likes to draw for me on the other side. It was super sweet. I've been wearing it on a ribbon.

    ReplyDelete
  52. i got a fake fur coat from my aunt for christmas. I feel like I need to find a wardrobe that can take me to Narnia in it, it's THAT awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I got a Mass Effect tech jacket which is awesome! I also have the pre-order of the fancy pants Tali statue, aslo from Mass Effect. For video games i got Dance Central 3, in which you must use your sweet dance moves to become a secret dance agent and take down the evil doctor tan that wants to make dancing orderly and ban all free style. To do this you must go back in time using a dancing time machine. Yes. It's awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Glad you got the charms! I never truly trust the USPS around this time of the year, especially from one coast to another. Hope you get a late Christmas gift - credit from Redbook Magazine! :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I got a Dremel for my birthday Dec 13 from my mom and an attachment kit from her for Christmas. so excited to start crafting!

    ReplyDelete
  56. My husband made me a display stand for the Ginny Weasley replica wand I got at Universal Studios during our family vacation. He dyed the wood Gryffindor red and gold. My 11 year old gave me Professor McGonagall's wand, and my 10 year old gave me Hermione's. I reciprocated with the 25th anniversary set of Star Trek: The Next Generation Pez dispensers. Also, my 10 year old knew my 11 year old wanted a diamond pickaxe in Minecraft, so he drew him one on a card. It was a good day!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I got the 11 Doctors minifigure set and four MetalWorks airplane kits
(http://www.innovatoys.com/metal-works) Can't wait to start putting them together! : D

    ReplyDelete
  59. I got a new sewing machine--the SINGER 160 Anniversary Limited Edition one, so pretty! And I got a new random orbit sander! Some of my family members were surprised at how giddy I was over the sander, but I love both of them!!

  60. Love all your geeky gifts, and glad the jewelry made it okay! My family didn't do gifts this year, but I got frog socks, books and bookmarks from friends.

  61. How awesome! I got a sewing machine & I'm in love! I had been borrowing my mother in law's but when I got it I finished a faux motorcycle jacket for my son and it was done so quick. Told my husband, who got it for me, it was a good thing we were already married or I might just marry it. ;)
