John Made Me Cry Today, And He Doesn't Even Know It

John's been sick this week, so it's been kinda quiet over here as he sleeps and sniffles the days away. (I would say it's "just" a head cold, but given the sonic boom quality of his rapid fire sneezes, there is no "just.") He always insists on sleeping on the couch when he's sick, and growls angrily if I get too close to "the contagion zone," no matter how hard I roll my eyes.

Today John started to feel slightly human again, so I tried to convince him to sleep in the bed for the afternoon. "I'm not even in there," I said, "You won't get me sick! Just go!" In answer he scowled, and in a tone of utmost exasperation, said this:

"Do you know how often I wish I could take things for you?" He motioned to my corset. "The painful periods, the times you're sick, the anxiety attacks? Do you know how often I ask God to give me those things, instead of you? So no, I'm not sleeping in the bed. I'm not getting you sick. I'm taking this one."

Then he sneezed, and flumped back down on the couch, and completely missed all these tears.

I love you, Sweetie. Feel better soon.

  32. John is an amazing guy. But then you are pretty amazing yourself. I was a total failure at the whole couple hood thing do I readily admire the ones who make it work.

Also, have you looked at getting a Mirena? My Doc told me I was not a candidate for a hysto but recommended I try it. The adjustment period sucked but now I'm almost completely period and pain free.

    1. I haven't looked at that one, no, but I had such bad reactions to hormones & birth control (back when I was on them) that I'm wary of trying them again. :/ I had the ablation, which helped, and I'm doing pretty well managing the pain with just a corset and occasional Tylenol. (I've also heard fixing my thyroid stuff can help, so fingers crossed on that, too.)

    2. They make a non-hormonal one, made of copper. I liked mine for a while but then I got WORSE periods, so it didn't last long for me, but just so you know there's an option!

  35. Add me to the list of "John made me cry too!" Aww...I hope I can find a guy like that. Also, whenever I eventually meet you guys (I plan on going to Dragon*Con eventually and I will HUNT YOU DOWN...actually, that came out looking way creepier than it sounded in my head...), I am going to give him a giant bearhug. Because he is awesome. I'll give you one too, because you're awesome as well, of course, but...I'm gonna end this comment now, I'm sounding increasingly creepy (in my defense, just worked a twelve-hour, overnight shift, and about to get a few hours of sleep before I do it again, so a little loopy right now...).

  47. You're both wonderful people and you bring a lot of people a lot of happiness. You both inspire folks who otherwise would have felt alone or that there was no hope. I first found you because of a book you helped create for a little girl who needed encouragement and you've only gotten more encouraging since then. You are both kind, good, wonderful people and I'm so grateful you both exist. Please know how very worth it you are. That goes out to EVERYone reading my post. You are all so very worth it. Please don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Please know there are people out there who care and that there is hope. Don't ever give up on yourselves.

May love be your guide & serendipity your constant companion.

  53. Jen, this post reminded me (in a roundabout way) that you SAVED MY LIFE last month.
I was sleepless from cramps which seized me like back spasms for the third night in a row, job and school was suffering from my fatigue, and while I was crying into my pillow, your post about corset compression for period pain came back to me.

I had nothing to lose, so I put on a pair of compression-top stockings and the pain immediately abated, allowing me to get a restive night's sleep. John is an amazing hubby... but he also has an amazing wife, who overcomes so many pitfalls, and brings so many people happiness.

You BOTH are amazing, inspirational, and the world is a better place, knowing your love. All the best. <3

  55. Have you read "Love and Respect" by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs? Dr. Eggerichs explains in his book that a man has a deep need to protect and even die for his woman. John's words totally speak to that reality. It seems weird as a woman, but let him sleep on the couch. It will communicate the respect he desires from you.

  56. I love you two.

  57. Your John sounds like my Clay. Sounds like he understands what it is to be a husband :)

  58. It really is the little words that are said to remind us why we love the men we choose. Especially the men that ACTUALLY say them. Hope John feels better. and tell him to quit being so stubborn. :)

  66. Hi Jen! I know you probably get a lot of suggestions/ideas to help ease your cramping, but I couldn't help but throw this on to the pile. Have you tried using essential oils? My best friend in high school would miss days at a time due to her cramps, but then her mom got into essential oils (she had Lupus and was looking for more natural relief). My friend used a blend called Dragon Time (Young Living), and it really helped with the pain. There are other blends that may be useful, too. Here's a link: http://homemadewellness.com/must-have-essential-oils-to-survive-your-period-pms/
They also have oil blends to help with anxiety, migraines, and a host of other ailments/conditions. I don't know if you have a distributor near you, but it might be worth looking into.

And your husband is wonderful :-)

And you Jen, are an equally wonderful woman.
John's been with you through everything all the anxiety and the cramps, when you were with him when he almost died and when he regained his hearing and you to have the most inspiring beautiful stories of sticking with each other and being there for each other when your bodies are giving you trouble.
Your love just seems so perfect and easy and I'm so glad you two found each other in this crazy world!
