Edwardian Ball 2011

Mark Day, the guy who filmed the crossplay Justice League I featured recently, just sent me his latest video. It's pretty awesome, too, so I thought I'd share:

This is the Edwardian Ball held recently in Los Angeles. I remember seeing Mark's last video of the San Francisco Ball last February, and both are equally incredible. The Ball itself is both beautiful and disturbing by turns, and I'm fascinated by the mash-up of Victorian, steampunk, carnival, and just plain weird styles. Part of the performance is a live staging of Edward Gorey's "The Eleventh Hour," and then there are lots of musical numbers, dances, and aerial acts. Definitely a spectacle in every sense of the word, and Mark captures it all beautifully.

Anyway, hope you enjoy, and check out Mark's Youtube channel for more!

  2. Your comment about attending being terrifying is exactly how I feel about the Labyrinth Masquerade. I want to go, but I know I'd be terrified the moment I did.

    Pretty, though - http://www.labyrinthmasquerade.com/

  3. Theres an event in Tampa this weekend called Taboo. Its more Fetish than Edwardian, but it has a similiar aesthetic to this Edwardian Ball video! :)

  4. Speaking of Edison light bulbs, for your dining room, try www.rejuvenation.com, they cost mostly under $20. ;)

  5. Ah, Edward Gorey! Now it makes sense! (I didn't read your description until after I watched the video.) The story looked very familiar to me!

It looks like it was beautiful, but not really an event I would go to either. But it's only because I'm not into the sex side of it...I like the costuming and the performances but don't care for any of the weird sex stuff. But hey, to each his own, right?

  8. Beautifully, beautifully made video of an event that, yeah, would scare me poop-less. But I admire those that have the desire and fortitude for this kind of thing.

    Thank you for sharing. :-)

  9. You can hear more of the music here. They have twelve full songs you can listen to, and a clip from NPR.

Thank you so much for sharing Jen, that was hands down the coolest thing I've seen all month!!! Just when I thought it couldn't get any more fabulous, it totally did. I would so be down to go to one of these things, sadly I don't know that I could connvince any of my friends to go with me :( but at least I get to get a little taste of it from you :)

  11. Disappointed that there is such a serious absence of actual Edwardian garb. Cool event none the less.

  13. If you love that stuff we do something called "the great hand car regatta" here in Santa Rosa, CA. I know how much you love steam punk! http://handcar-regatta.com/
