How To Fix A Warped Pan: John's Bonking PAN-demonium

Wow, apparently a bunch of you have warped pans at home! So by popular request, John's back again to show you how to flatten out those wobbly buggers - and all you need is a straight ruler and a rubber mallet! I would never have thought to do it this way, so once again I'm amazed by my hubby's ingenuity.

Take it away, John!

I hope this... pans out... for a lot of you. (Heeeeey oh.) I know it helps John to have new projects to focus on and share with you guys, so please keep the video suggestions coming! Tell me what build projects are on your wish list, something around the house you'd like to fix, or anything else you'd like to see John tackle on camera.

Oh hey, and since we're talking cookware I asked John what his favorite knife was... and it turns out that not only does he have a favorite knife, he REALLY REALLY has a favorite knife. I was unprepared for this level of enthusiasm, y'all. John pitched this thing to me like a match-maker on commission at a single's party, what whaaaat.

Apparently it's the bee's knees. And apparently the way to John's heart is a really sharp knife.

I'm just cracking myself up over here, don't mind me.

Anyhoo, John has made us dinner almost every night for the past 2 years, and is forever looking up reviews and trying out new knives, so I'm gonna say you can trust him on both pan bonking *and* knife recommendations.

  1. Ok, now I have to go try out all my pans and see which wobble. Great tutorial!

I've got lots of other house repairs I've just been ignoring. So some personal requests here: how to fix/mask a cracked floor tile; how to replace the faucet on a pedestal sink; how to caulk (for someone that cannot pipe with consistent pressure or accuracy 😂).

    1. Yes on the caulking! It's so intimidating. Thanks for a great video!

  2. My culinary crush is my Messermeister Meridian chef's knife. And the shears from the set. Awesome knives are life changing.

  4. Right now I'm working on Steampunking my computer monitor...I purchased a retro keyboard from Azio https://aziocorp.com/collections/keyboard/products/retro-classic-usb?variant=10731924422699 and then after that I"m going to decorate the front of my bar....

    1. Ohhh, I love retro keyboards! If I didn't need the ergonomic split style I'd've bought one years ago. So pretty.

  5. This is an excellent knife - I actually lost this knife in my divorce and had to replace it!

  6. What a delightful video! I can't wait to impress my husband with the use of the technical term "bonk". :)

    1. LOL - and bonus, "bonk" is multi-use. You'll be amazed how many everyday activities can be classified as "bonking" - and some of them aren't even dirty! (HEYO.)

  7. Thanks for the recommendation, my SO also has strong feelings about knives (he's also the main cook), and this looks like a good idea for b-day gift. Does John have a favorite knofe sharpening tool or knife care regimen he recommends?

  8. John's advice is awesome and practical and very well presented. But I have to admit that the captions are my favorite part. Bonking intensifies!!

    1. WOOT! I'm taking partial credit for that, since I helped with the subtitles, haha. I also sang "IT'S THE FINAL BONK-DOWN" each and every time we reviewed it before posting, which I'm sure John and the cats appreciated.

  9. Great tutorial! I hadn't known that it's so simple to straighten a warped pan.

(*Awkward whisper* I had also mostly encountered the verb "bonk" in British slang, in which it means something very different... kinda hard to adopt a technical term with those connotations in my head... *blushes*)

    1. Haha! That adds a whole new awkward dimension to the video.

    2. In the US, that word is "boink," so close, but not quite the same. :D

    3. Considering the amount of dirty jokes I make on Cake Wrecks, this only adds to the awesome for me, lol.

  10. Thank you, John! Surprisingly, I already have a mallet from the dollar store. I didn't have a purpose in mind when I bought it, but I couldn't resist the feeling of power I got when I held it in my hand. I shall name it Mjolnir and use its power for the good of our cookware.

  11. I bet America's Test Kitchen/Cook's Illustrated has some good knife reviews. Their equipment tests are really thorough

  12. Thanks John! My requests for movies are: how does one match stain on their new window trims with the existing dark brown stained trim in the house? (I might be the only one with this issue...) Also a matching question about how to you match whites? Is there a "universal" white, or do you just get paint chips and hope?

As for the knife, I have that whole set!! My favorite, personally, is the Santoku. I like the curve for rocking the chopping! And, all jokes aside, I had my knives professionally sharpened, and they have been making me happy every day since then! ;)

    1. Good suggestion, I'll see if John thinks he can teach color-matching. He used to color-match the hardest orders for both Disney and Universal, so he is freakishly good at it.

There is a white known as "popcorn white" for ceilings, but even that can change from brand to brand. So there isn't a universal one, no, which is what makes touching up trim so darn tricky.

  13. I'd love to see a video (series?) on power tools for those who have never touched them before - basic identification, the very basics of what you can do with them, and what to search on for more information. John's video presence is very calming and matter of fact and not intimidating, which is really important for rank beginners. My own personal request would be Remedial Routers, since it looks like I'm going to have to learn to use the router, and I have no clue where to start.

    1. I'd second that!

Also, any techniques he may know for hanging things on walls without leaving big obvious nail holes...

    2. yes, this!! I own a hammderdrill, but don't have a clue what its for!

    3. I second the request for Remedial Routers. I could really use some help with that one.

  14. is this a good knife for sharpening as in i can keep it sharp by sharpening it? is this a good all around knife? also what knife do you recommend for fish?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, John sharpens this knife regularly himself! We don't eat fish at home since John doesn't like seafood, so I'm sorry I don't have a recommendation for you there.

  15. I'm amazed at John's ease in front of the camera! He speaks clearly, have a nice presence, makes a video about something I could swear is an April Fool's Joke and seems totally serious... 10/10 !

  16. Any recommendations on tools to *sharpen* those precious knives? Mine are getting pretty dull, and sorting through whetstones is a little overwhelming,

    1. Ahh, you must be slightly psychic: John just started shooting a vid on how to sharpen scissors, and he uses his favorite knife-sharpening tool! Hopefully we'll have that for you soon.

    1. Our friend Renee made the plush 'bot, isn't it adorable? And don't worry, it's usually on display in my office; I just decided John's background needed a little cutening up. ;)

    2. Is Renee reading this?? Renee - do you have a pattern you'd be willing to share with a fellow crafter? I'd love to try my hand at making one! It could match my epbot robot tattoo!!

    3. Renee told me before that she made up the pattern as she went along, so I don't think she has one to share. If anyone ever succeeds in replicating it, though, I'd love to share the pattern!

  20. Been reading you for years! Actually met you guys on the cake wreck tour, John said we were a very dapper family! Which I will cherish always... I am very partial to faux painting techniques, and you always talk about your olden days and I would LOVE to see some stuff! Watching John making literally anything is peaceful AF... When our house is done, (been working on the property for YEARS now) I'm hoping to make our first family trip to Wizarding World (maybe meet you guys again?)

  21. Oh...my...gosh...that's all it takes?? Thank you!

I am an itsy bitsy teensy tiny bit disappointed, though. I was really really hoping there'd be a Swedish Chef impersonation in the kitchen but with him saying, "bonk bonk bonk!" :D

  22. And now I know what I've been wrong. I'm not bonking the pans gently enough. Seriously, you give me a mallet and I nail whatever I'm bonking like I'm in a horror movie every time. I'll have to try John's Bonking Method. Thanks for this! ^_^
This knowledge will also come in handy with my current project. I'm turning scrap pieces of corrugated metal roofing into raised garden beds and using some to turn a warped and split water trough into a planter. I'm doing well with the raised beds but not the warped trough planter. Maybe I've just been going at it a little too vigorously?

  24. sorry if this is a double post, i don't see my comment. thanks so much for this! my landlord just got me a flat-top stove & some of my pots don't sit level, they spin around when liquid is boiling in them, it drives me crazy! this is a perfect fix!
