The World's Most Unfortunately Timed Aladdin Shirt

I forgot to post this last week, but the new Aladdin trailer dropping today reminded me to share the giggle: I found something great at Disney's Character Warehouse, the big off-property clearance outlet. It's where all the out-of-date or overstock merchandise goes, along with anything being cleared from the parks, like all the toy guns last year when they banned them. Everything at the warehouse is 60% off or more, so John and I go pretty often to browse.

Anyhoo, just over a week ago, I found a bunch of racks there of this shirt. Anyone else see the issue?

Ohhhh BURN

I'm imagining the mad scramble to get these out of the parks while the whole world was blowing up over Will Smith painted blue, and it's making me laugh a little too much. Someone really didn't think that one through. (That, or someone in inventory was staging a subtle protest? Ha!)

Speaking of the new trailer, as of this morning John and I are officially a House Divided over the new Aladdin. John's onboard the CGI flying carpet, I'm over here sputtering about Boy Band Jafar who sounds like he sings tenor. What the actual heck. Jafar is supposed to OLD! And an evil hypnotist with a deep, villainous voice! Eh! Eh! ::flails::

In case you haven't seen it yet:

I'm pretty possessive of Aladdin, though; that's MY Disney movie. I saw it in the theater on my first date ever, then my friend Chris and I memorized the entire script and quoted it at each other religiously for the next many, many years. (Heck, we STILL do when we see each other.)

I will say the last few songs look great, and make me wish they were releasing a bunch of music videos instead of a full movie. Buuut after seeing the way John went starry-eyed over the last minute of the trailer, I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing it in the theater, no matter how much side-eye I throw his way, ha.

Getting back to the Genie shirts: no, I didn't buy one. I bought this one, because it was cheaper:

The design is embroidered, and good news: it fit! Weirdly the neck was the only thing that's a little snug.

Here's one more clearanced shirt someone didn't think through:

I watched 3 people in a row read this shirt, pause, look confused, and then go "OHHH!" when I explained it to them. Which is a shame, because the design is awesome.

[UPDATE: Sorry, peeps, didn't mean to leave you hanging! Pinocchio's nose is long because he's lying; he IS there for churros.)

And finally, since I'm sharing random fun photos from the Outlet, check out this transforming Mulan purse!

So clever! And sparkly. GO GO SPARKLY BUNS.

Right, time for you to weigh in, Dizgeeks: who's flying with John to a whole new world, and who's side-eyeing from the sidelines with me?

And who's being all reasonable by waiting to see how the movie actually is before passing judgment? (C'mon, now, where's the fun in that?! :p)

  1. The CGI looks better than the live action Beauty and the Beast so I'll probably see it.

    1. He's lying. (Hence the long nose.) He IS there for the churros.

    2. I thought it had something to do with a donkey. Is there a donkey in Pinocchio? I still don't get it.

    3. LOL, Betty, are you perhaps mixing up burro with churro? One is a small donkey -- the other is a dessert treat.

    4. But there are donkeys in Pinocchio, on the Pleasure Island, not that it’s relevant to the joke on the shirt

  3. I really wish they'd adapted the Broadway musical instead of the original movie - it's really a huge improvement, and I loved the movie! But I enjoyed even the kids'-theater version I saw of the Broadway show... the added songs are fantastic, and the characters they added work much better story-wise than Abu and Rajah.

  4. I'm one of those who wishes they hadn't started making live action remakes, and focused instead on live action versions of other fairy tales they haven't made movies of already. I think they all suffer by comparison to their animated originals. Mulan might be the only one to break the trend for me (fingers crossed).

  5. I second the need to have the churro thing explained...sorry if that shows my ignorance or lack of geekiness...

    1. Someone else pointed out his nose, so the joke is that he's lying and he is there for the churros. As far as I can tell, there's no connection between Pinocchio and churros other than the fact everyone likes them. So it's not a you thing.

    2. I need help with it too..

    3. I believe churros are an iconic park snack at Disney, so the t-shirt is “I’m not here [at Disney World] for the churros,” but they are lying because Disney churros are delicious. That’s my understanding anyway! I think it’s definitely a t-shirt to wear inside the park among the churro stands. :) Outside the connection between Pinocchio and the churros isn’t as strong.

  6. I am not a fan of live action remakes and to me this one was going to be a huge disappointment but the trailer doesn't look bad at all. Time will tell.

  7. Just watched the trailer... I some how missed that this was even happening! I'm 100% in! I loved the trailer, the Jasmine and Aladdin casting are perfect, Will Smith as Genie is inspired. His take on the character looks like it will be different enough not to make me feel sad about Robin Williams the whole time, and Jafar looks at least 10 years older than Jasmine and Aladdin - hard to tell though in that clip.
    I can't wait!!!
But I sympathize with you... Beauty & the Beast is My Movie. I really struggled with the trailers for the live action version but after seeing it, I enjoy and appreciate it as it's own thing (like David S. Pumpkins) rather than a replacement of the original animation. I hope you have the same experience with Aladdin.

  8. I'm going to reserve judgment until I see the movie.

That being said, I have not been a fan of the recent live action remakes. Maleficent was visually good, but can't hold a candle to the original Sleeping Beauty. Plus, the messed up the story. Since Sleeping Beauty is MY favorite Disney movie, I have lots of opinions about this. The live-action Beauty & the Beast was also kind of "meh" for me.

So, I waiting to see the new Aladdin before I decide if I like it or not, but my expectations are kind of low.

  9. I'm generally against all the live action remakes--for the most part they are shot-for-shot remakes, they don't add anything over the originals, and they speak down to the quality of animation as a medium--but after seeing the trailer I'm cautiously optimistic about Aladdin. As someone who wasn't born yet when the original was released, a lot of the humor is really dated and could stand for a new take (I'm at about 30% for recognizing Robin Williams' Genie impersonations). Plus Will Smith is one of my favorite actors so I'm excited to see what he brings to the role. One of my friends referred to this trailer as The Fresh Prince of Agrabah, and honestly I can get behind that.

  10. Like several others, I'm generally not that interested in the live-action remakes; most of them don't look like they'll add to or improve the originals in any meaningful way. (I respect that others may feel differently, though!) This trailer looks okay but probably not like something I'll go see.

  11. For the snug neck on the t-shirt, just cut the collar band off. Jersey doesn't fray so it will look great! And fit better too.

  12. I am with you on the Jafar voice. I didn't get ANY sense of evil from his lines. I also wasn't fond of the bit of Friend Like Me.

  13. I'm not bothering with the live-action remakes that are just reproducing the original. If they're taking the story in a different direction, like Maleficent or how it looks like they're doing Dumbo, then I'm on board. But if I just want to rewatch the original, I'll rewatch the original. I'd rather Disney spend their time making NEW movies.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh, I didn't even know that the trailer had dropped let alone heard about the new genie hoopla. I'm also among the uninterested in live action versions of Disney animated movies.

Props to whoever came up with the concept of that Mulan purse! That's pretty great :D

  15. ok... I just want to point out the face on the lady behind the you. Like you're performing some kind of magic and she wants you to do it just once more so she can figure it out. Intrigued to be sure.

  16. After seeing the full trailer here as opposed to the partial trailer I saw on Instagram last night, I'm cautiously optimistic about it. I totally agree that Jafar doesn't seem to fit an evil character at all, but the music sounds good and the visuals look pretty. I'm not a huge fan of the live-action remakes. I did like Cinderella, but that's because they actually added to the story. I didn't like Beauty and the Beast or Maleficent really and haven't been interested in any others. I'll probably see this one at the theater, though I might wait until it hits our second-run theater.

  17. I'm torn on making a live-action version that is exactly like the animated. I kind of want it to be different because if I wanted to see the movie, I would just watch the original. But then I'm mad if they change things. I'm sitting there saying, "But that's not how it is in the original!" I am kind of happy that I can at least sing along and totally embarrass my kids.

I'm with you on Jafar being totally off. When I saw the trailer I was confused as to what lady was speaking when it was only Aladdin and Jafar on screen, and Aladdin's mouth wasn't moving...

Aladdin was my movie too! My college roommate and I LOVED this movie so much that whenever we met someone who hadn't seen it, we promptly dragged them to the $1 movies to watch it. We even changed our outgoing message on our answering machine to "Poof! What do you need? Poof! What do you need? Poof! What do you need?" My mom was not amused...

  18. My vote would be for not watching it in the theater, because I think most movies are much better when seen at home, in pajamas, snuggled with my family and eating good popcorn! (And if the movie really sucks its less painful to cut line and change the choice for the night).

  19. I can't imagine how the live-action Aladdin could be better than the Disney animated one, but I have been wrong before.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Totally team side eye over here!

  21. Guess after seeing the trailer, I’m kinda siding with John on this one! It looks like it will be a good movie.

  22. Will it help to know that Alan Tudyk plays Iago? :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. This was a plus for me in regards to the movie. I was sitting there watching the trailer thinking, who's Iago? and then saw a news story about him playing the role. I am on the fence about the remakes, but willing to give it a go.

  23. I've decided that I go into these movies with an open mind and heart. It's a remake, so it'll never BE the original. I try to judge without comparing to the original.

  24. I was staunchly in the anti-live action camp for the Aladdin movie, I too had a mega connection with the original, cultural appropriation and racial stereotypes and all. It was a fun delightful movie, and Robin Williams, accept no substitutes. Then i saw the new trailer. Not so firmly entrenched in the idea of it automatically being horrid. Still not sold on some of the casting, but currently I'm willing to give the movie a shot at least. It has to be better than the pretty-but-dull live action Beauty and the Beast right?

  25. NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE.

(that's 3 nopes for Robin Williams, one for James Monroe Iglehart and one for me)

Aladdin is also MY DISNEY MOVIE!! I love it so much that I even can hum along to all the background music. When I went to Disneyland in 2009, besides all the original park attractions, it was the ONLY THING on my MUST DO LIST at DCA (and, btw, it was kinda fantastic, random painted blue Genie and everything)

And now, now that I've seen the Broadway version with James Monroe Iglehart (currently Lafayette/Jefferson in Hamilton, btw) I can fully stand behind him as a very capable 2nd Genie to Robin Williams. Most importantly, as trite as this sounds, he made the role of Genie his own... less impressions, more AMAZING SINGING!! Oh, and the dude can MOVE! LOL

So now... We've got Will Smith, who I really like as an actor and uh, artist... but who will not provide ample impressions like Robin Williams, and as evidence from the trailer is NOT singing the way JMI can... So, if we're remaking as live action, does it have to be a musical? Already answered as "yes" so I'm not into it. I think I'd be happier if it was a straight movie.

I've rambled, but I'm not excited. I get they've gotta have at least one "big name" actor, but..... eh.. no... And also, is the Genie gonna be blue part of the time and part of the time not!??! So confused.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah I wondered about the blue thing too, since part of the trailer he is one way and the rest, well, not. It was very confusing, I am sure there will be some comment made during to shed light, and I suppose of RW Genie was the shop keeper as well, that could establish precedence for the blue/not blue thing. Seems a stretch of an explanation though. I figure I will wait and decide either with future trailers or the actual movie. I won't be seeing it opening day though, it hasn't grabbed me anywhere near enough to justify blowing $15-22 on a ticket.

I hadn't known about the Broadway version, that sounds nifty!

      Delete
    2. I'm guessing "not-blue" Genie is undercover as a normal dude, so he can be out in public without attracting attention.

  26. I bet they made Jafar younger because as creepy as it is for an older man to be trying to mack on a teenaged girl in a cartoon, it's much worse in live action. (The vast age difference is why Michael Crawford didn't play the Phantom in the film version of Phantom of the Opera - too creepy when you can see the actors up close.)

I haven't found a single live-action remake that has intrigued me other than Beauty and the Beast, and even that was a huge disappointment that I couldn't finish watching. This probably won't be any different. BUT that version of A Whole New World sounds lovely, I would like to hear that in totality!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh, boy, I'm a-gunna get kicked off this blog fersure, but I've never seen Aladdin (the Disney version) with Robin Williams. BUT, generally, I'm in the live-action-remakes-suck camp. Just like there are almost zero movies that are better than books, there are almost zero live-action-remakes that are better than animated. Maleficent was "okay," but it's NOT Sleeping Beauty, not in any sense.

    ReplyDelete
  28. So... Is there any way I could convince you to send me one of those awesome Mulan purses? I'm happy to pay!

    ReplyDelete
  29. THAT'S WHAT IT WAS! There was something bugging me about the Aladdin trailer (aside from Genie's voice not being my beloved Robin) and I couldn't for the life of me (and about 5 watch-throughs) figure out what it was. You solved it! Jafar's supposed to be dark and spoopy and have a deep voice and...and... 🤐 I love my villains and I'm not thinking this Jafar is going to cut it. I'm willing to withhold judgement until I see the completed film but I'll be doing so with narrow-eyed suspicion.

  30. Aladdin was my husband and I's first date. Our wedding song was A Whole New World. I have an entire room of Aladdin collectibles and have seen the play on Broadway 3 times. I will give Genie a chance, but Jafar is not what he should be. Regardless I will be at the first showing of the movie in my area. I am thrilled that Abu is in the movie since he is not in the Broadway version.

  31. This shirt is still not as poorly-timed as when the Aladdin stage show re-opened at California Adventure right around the time Robin Williams died, and they came out with a pin that was Genie saying, "I'M HERE! What are your other two wishes?" I got teary when I saw it.

    1. Jinkies! Yeah that would definitely be the crowning Bad Timing shirt.
