In Which I Attempt to Embarrass My Cat

Today I'm working on a cherry blossom tree mural for a friend's nursery, and the pressure's on because I already mentioned it to those of you on Facebook, which means I'm committed to posting pictures of the end result, and I've never free-handed a big tree on a wall before, and this could end up being that thing we're still talking about ten years from now in a "Wow, I never knew a tree could look like a demented platypus doing interpretive dance" kind of way, as opposed to a "JEN IS THE NEW DEMIGOD OF CRAFT PAINT" kind of way.

So, to distract us all from the impending judge-Jen's-artistic-talent-a-thon, here are some *other* really embarrassing pictures.

Of my cat.

SHA-POW!

"'SUP."

If this angle confuses you, just know that John took the picture, and Lily (the cat)(obviously)(I hope) is wedged in between my belly and my desktop. Because like most cats, Lily has determined that where there's a will, but no lap, there's still a way.

She's also determined that my hair is an acceptable cat toy:

"I don't always bat playfully at dangling objects, but when I do, they're attached to my owner's head and I'm sprawled out on my back like a drunken weasel."

I'm not sure any of this is having an affect on Lily's dignity.

So how about a video of her SNORING?

(Turn up your sound!)

She sounds like a happy Tribble. Which is kind of awesome. And while I still refuse to believe that *I* snore (AHEM JOHN AHEM), I will accept the term "Tribble purr." As in, "Wow, Jen, last night you were Tribble purring sooo loooud!" Then I could be all, "Heck yeah I'm even adorable in my sleep! LL&P, bee-yotches!!" And so forth.

Ok, I think I still have some cherry blossoms to paint.

Wish me luck, and happy Friday, everyone!

  1. She's pretty! If weird. Which is redundant, cause she's a cat. My cat snores like that, too...happy little feline sighs. It's stinkin' precious.

  2. I straight up lol'd at the pictures. cats are ridiculous but your comments are what really got me.

  3. Hee! My Pinky does the same thing, usually when he's wedged behind me in the office chair :)

  4. No offense, but it bothers me just a little that your cat named Lily has blue eyes, not green eyes. Because, yeah, I'm that kind of geek.

But she's a pretty kitty, so I forgive.

  5. According to Bob Ross, there are no mistakes in painting, just happy accidents. Trees are supposed to look a bit gnarly and odd. Embrace it!

  6. "luck, and happy Friday, everyone!" XD
But yes, I know how cats are, having two of them that constantly bug me mostly, because I'm the one who's home most of the time...

  7. My cats snore like that. And instead of sitting on my lap at weird angles while I'm working, they decide that sitting on my laptop while I'm typing is better.

  8. My cat, god bless his departed fuzzy little self, used to purr so loud when he slept, 9 times out of 10 he would wake himself up and look around, annoyed, with an expression that said, "DUDE! Who woke me up?"

  9. Don't worry, Jen. There are only 5 documented cases where a badly-rendered cherry blossom tree mural was directly connected to the child later becoming a chainsaw-wielding serial killer. Each child was arrested while muttering, "I have to cut down the tree. Are you the tree?" So, no pressure.

C'mon. You know it's going to be stunning, and it will cause all of us other crafters to stare at it in wonder while denying what we feel is envy. I would also love to see a painting of an interpretive dancing platypus. (Hint, hint.)

Lily is gorgeous, and we've officially adopted the phrase "tribble purr" here. (It sounds SO MUCH better than "horta snorts.") My long-haired cat, Badger, breathes like Darth Vader. We've spent several hundred dollars proving there was absolutely nothing wrong with him. When friends look at him askance, we just say, "Luke, I am your tabby." The ones who laugh are invited back.

    1. LOL big time!!!! I'm sure Jen was thinking..."Thanks so much, Sharyn. Really, you shouldn't have." :-)

So, does Badger have appropriate gear for his Halloween costume? :-) What about a Leia-costumed cat to accompany him? I'm visualizing a white tabby with brown cinnamon buns on the sides of her head... (no, no :-) here - I think I use those waaaay too much...)

  11. Oh such a gorgeous kitty! I love your where there's a will there's a way line! Don't cats just do the wierdest things? :)

  12. Lily: "Draw me like one of your French girls!"

(I generally use my laptop in my lazy boy with my feet up, to allow enough sitting space for the computer AND the cat. Am I trained or what?)

  13. Cat "snores" are just so wonderful. They're more like little moans, aren't they... or nasally sighs of contentment. ahhhh, soothing :)

  14. Lily is gorgeous! My cat snores, too. But I'm probably the only one in my house that would find it adorable because she REALLY snores. (If it's quiet you can hear her from across the room.)

  15. Good Luck!! Yeah that cat is cute.

  16. My cat snores like crazy and he is really loud some nights. He also manages to get himself into some pretty strange spots.
    Cats are weird :D
Check him out just a snoring away.

  17. Whenever I've had to draw something very large, I find the basic image, copy onto a transparency, then project it with a, well, projector. Then I trace the basic image and jazz it up to suit my needs.

  18. Heya Jen, Tip for the painting, go to a craft store and buy fake cherry blossom branches. Basically just squiggle some brown paint on the wall and then randomly glue the silk blossoms and leaves to the wall.

  19. NO LAP, YOU SAY?! NOT A PLACE FOR NAPS?! No.

    I MAKE IT SO.

  20. Cats are so bendy!
A cherry blossom mural - now that's a craft project I COULD do without fear of failure or serious injury! Can't wait to see it. Am definitely going to attempt to hollow out that lightbulb....I fancy a mini knitted aquarium inside....

  23. I hope that you are going to post pictures of the tree here and not just on twitter for those of us who don't use twitter. I know, I know. Now I have to go listen to the radio, and read a newspaper and hand write a letter.

  24. While my Maine Coons don't snore, they do sprawl on their backs. Now I know it is the "drunken Weasel" pose! THanks for the Lily pictures. She reminds me of Charlene Butterbeanof 'Itty Bitty kitty comittee" fame. And your Cherry Tree is delightful!
