The Hunt Is On!

Last weekend John and I started working on our WDW Magic Kingdom scavenger hunt again. Now that the weather's nice and we don't have any book tours or deadlines looming I'm hoping to make some serious progress. (WOOT!!)

In addition to the clues and questions and general trivia tidbits for each area of the park, I'm also working on some park-wide riddles. I'm having a blast writing them, but it's hard to know what's too easy and what's too difficult. So for a test run, here's one of the harder ones:

I’m rude and high and mighty,
And can only be found
Where children screech in glee
And sparkles line the ground.

Who (or What) am I?

The riddles do require a familiarity with the Kingdom (and again, this is for Orlando, not CA), but you don't have to be in the park to know the answer.

Please don't spoil the fun by posting the answer in the comments, but do let me know if you think you know what it is - and whether it's too easy or too hard. Thanks, guys!

  2. "Park-wide riddles" is really hard to say. Say that three times, fast.

AND. I REALLY wanna do your Disney scavenger hunt (even though I don't know the parks well, and would most likely fail miserably). I don't even care. I wanna!!

  3. Hi Jen,
I'm a former Castmember, who worked in reservations. I'm also a long time Annual Passholder and even though I've moved away from Florida I still visit the parks at least once a year. I have only barest idea where your riddle might be directing me to go. (and that's only because I'm assuming it's limited to the Magic Kingdom.)

That said bring on the hunt!

I love Disney and have been several times, but I don't know what you are talking about in your riddle. Sorry! On a side note, I am sure you have seen this before, but I just read The Dark Side of Disney which details, in part, how to score in so many ways! I am not someone who would need to know that, but I find it really interesting to have some strange info like that. Also, the author has extensively toured the Utilidors. Now if you are a former CM then you already know this stuff, but if not then check out the book.

BTW, I am in no way affiliated with the author, Leonard Kinsey. Just sos ya know.

  5. I've only been to Disney World once... and I know that one! :) Easy. Of course, my Disney experience was sadly marred by my husband having some sort of flu bug so we missed a lot of Magic Kingdom and saw a lot of the bathrooms instead. We DID see what this clue is alluding to though! Good luck!

  6. I think I know it. But it took some pondering.

    Actually, I'm probably completely wrong.

  7. Wow, not a clue. Am I going to feel like a moron when I find out the answer, and it's really easy? ;-)
And I cannot say "Park-wide riddles" three times fast. It keeps coming out "widdles". *snicker*

  8. i have a REALLY strong idea, so i hope you'll post the answer next week? I too would love to do your scavenger hunt. I'm fairly familiar with the parks so it would be a fun thing to test myself and my girls. So envious you live in FL : )

  9. Not sure...but I've only been there once, and I avoided small children as much as possible. :)

  10. We were only there just...12 years ago...or so. I wish we lived nearer.

  11. I'm with Rachel. I'm a former castmember, too, and I don't have a clue as to where your riddle would send me.

BTW, please include Epcot in your scavenger hunt!!

  12. My husband has an idea... Anxious to know if he's right. We are cast members and he is a certified Disney Nerd.

  13. My family thinks we know the answer. Will you post the correct answer later??

  14. You guys can all feel free to e-mail me your guesses, and I'll let you know if you're right.

And happily I've had at least one couple get it so far - and several excellent (but still wrong) guesses.

And Erica - one park at a time! Ha! Let me see if I can get MK done first. ;)

  15. I've been to WDW 6 times in the last 4 years and I'm sad that I have no clue what the answer is.

  16. I thought I had an idea, but then I realized that it's just the Magic Kingdom. I know of a place in Epcot where the ground sparkles lol... I've been to WDW 14 times, 11 of them in the past 7 years, and I have NO clue...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh wait, maybe I have an idea now...

    ReplyDelete
  18. No clue, but then again, the last time I went to Magic Kingdom was April 1992, so... I am way over due. (I went to Epcot April 1997 though).

  19. I think I might know. If so, fairly easy.

  20. Never having been to WDW (and only having been to WDL once about... um... too many years ago), I haven't a clue, lol.

  21. When I lived in Tampa we went to WDW about 4 times (really couldn't afford it...I grew up poor)...but now that I live in Colorado we've only gone to Disneyland. I really need to take my daughter to WDW so she can see the difference.
I don't know if I can't figure out your clue because I haven't been there since 1985 or if I'm just clueless. LOL!

  22. Jen, it seems like it would be fun to figure out. I'm not very familiar with the park, I've been there twice, once when I was in 4th grade, and then again in 10th grade (I graduated from high school in 1999), so I don't know the answer, but there are enough clues in the riddle that people should be able to narrow it down. Hopefully. Sounds like fun to me. If/when we take our children there (we live in Idaho, so Disneyland is much closer), I would love to do the hunt. You are awesome!

  23. I don't know, but I sure know where I'd go look. Been to WDW 3 or 4 times in past 15 years. (DL almost yearly)

  24. I don't know, but my family is going for the first time this summer! Can you do a post with fun things to do with/without kids? Mine boys are the perfect Disney ages (11 and 8).

  25. I have no clue. I've been to WDW well over 50 times and I can't figure it out. I'm sure it is something really easy and obvious and I will feel like a total doorknob when I find out the answer. I just reached out for help from a bunch of my nerdy Disney internet friends. *shrug*

  26. I have not a single idea but I know where I'd head to first to look around. There should be some very hard clues, though, for that sense of accomplishment! I don't even need a prize to play this game.

If this does end up being a "print & do this whenever you go" thing then people could send you photos to post showing them in the process!

  27. Jen, I am not sure about the answer to the riddle but I was at Magic Kingdom recently and took part in a really cool trial verse of a park wide game that seemed like something you would like.

When we entered the park we noticed a sign by the fire station that said Magician's Needed Inquire inside. They gave my husband 5 cards. We had to find "stations" around the park. Some were well hidden and others were obvious. When we found the "station" a Disney character would appear on screen and set us up for our goal. My husband would have to cast a spell by choosing one of his cards and showing it to the screen. Then the character would then send us to the next "station."

I am sure this is a testing for something new (probably for kids, but aren't we all kids at heart?) Frequently we would notice a cast member watching us from a distance.

Anyway, I thought you guys might enjoy checking it out and maybe even blogging about it!

  28. @ Joni - We *just* learned about that on our last visit! It's called the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, and we kept finding all the various hidden "portals" around the park, which is what piqued our interest. It wasn't running at the time, but I found some vids online of it in testing.

After seeing it in action I don't think it looks *quite* as exciting as the Kim Possible missions at Epcot (since nothing physical moves or appears) but hopefully it will still be a fun addition - and you can BET I'll be playing! :)

  29. Could you give the answer please because I could be spot on or not. My mind is thinking of a couple possibilities as an answer.

  30. Clueless on the riddle (was last - and only - at MK in '84? Something like that lol)
The new game sounds similar to Magic Quest at Great Wolf Lodge - except, at GW you have to buy a wand to play. If its anything like, it'll probably be a HUGE hit with 90+% of the under 15 crowd - and a 110% hit with any and all Disney nerds ;)

  31. I'm a local passholder with little kids, so I've been in the parks about a hundred times in the last year, and I'm not sure what you're getting at.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Easy....definitely not a hard riddle.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am fairly certain I know where this is. I could picture it right away. We visit the parks about once a year.

  34. thought I knew it but "rude" is throwing me off....this is driving me nuts but it's fun!

  35. This is why I LOVE this blog! So sad after a Patriots loss and I come here to find you're back working on the scavenger hunt!!!

I don't totally know what it is, but I have a shadow of an idea where to go to look for it (I haven't been in 5 years but will be going in August after Star Wars Celebration!)

Thank you for being awesome and brightening my day! ºoº

  36. I've been to the MK at WDW more times than I can count and I don't have a clue as to the solution to the riddle. We were just there in December and I'm a pretty big Disney fan,so you would think I could figure this out. I'm actually bummed.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I totally wish I could participate! We live on the west coast and I know Disneyland really well. I love Disney trivia and games, but I've only been to WDW two times and both over 10 years ago. So I doubt I'd know any answers. I can't wait to go back when our kids are a little older. [Heavy sigh] Oh well.

  38. I've read EPOBOT for the longest time, but this is my first time commenting. I'm pretty sure I know what it is, and I really hope you post the answer next week!

  39. I'll keep this in mind... we're going in March with our son (his first time, and my first return visit in 18 years). :) I can't wait!

  40. Jen, I think something to consider is that several people have said that this could describe quite a few things, and you have gotten several guesses that are really good and kind of make sense but aren't the right ones.

The key to making good riddles for something like this is making it so there is literally only one possible answer. Throwing in little tiny details that make sense once you figure it all out and is like "OH, that's what THAT little hint meant!" is important.

    ReplyDelete
  41. @ Tracey - while some of the wrong guesses were good, none of them took into consideration *all* of the clues in the riddle. The people who guessed correctly almost didn't even need my confirmation, because they realized it fit too perfectly.

I know it's hard, but I wanted it to take everyone a little while to get!

And remember, everyone - you can always e-mail me your answer to see if you got it right!

  42. It took me a second or two, but I know I figured it out! I LOVE that you and John are making your own scavenger hunt and I can't wait to go back to WDW (can you blame me???) to try it out! Looking forward to when it is completed!

  43. I *think* I might know... and I'm an annual passholder... but... errr... test anxiety test anxiety!!!!

  44. We were at Disney last month, and I haven't a clue what your riddle is hinting at! I look forward to hearing more about your scavenger hunt.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!! I kept hoping that you would do the scavenger hunt, so happy to hear that you're working on it. I wrote to you last month about planning our first trip to Disney and I'm a little better prepared now, can't wait!
