And yes to Magnesium, (glycanate) and if your cramps are due to endometriosis you need to supplement with selenium (and vitamin E for absorption) No doctor knows this but every vet does. All the cows in the Netherlands get prophylactic selenium supplemented to make sure they won't develop endometriosis. I'm thinking what ever it is that helps with that condition is probably very similar for the rest of you who do not. I've only been seasoning my corset for about 11 days. my back pain is so much better, my lung issues seem improved, posture is better sleep is better, I actually skipped my mense inn February... which is quite a benefit since I am highly anemic . IDK anyone else this has happened to , but when I googled it this page came up. so I'd be interested in the content in which you found that said it can stop mense and it's bad for us. no one I've asked including google seems to have an answer. I read a medical paper about how the PC muscles (kegels) work during this one woman's period. They have a biofeedback device which measures how relaxed or contracted those muscles are. When they inserted the device, they found that her PC muscles were spasming a lot. They had her try to intentionally contract and release those muscles, and after a while, the PC muscles stopped spasming and her painful cramping went away.

I have found that doing kegels (clench for 10 seconds, release for 10 seconds, repeat) at the beginning of my period usually makes my painful cramps go away. If I take tylenol or ibuprofen, the pain is lessened but doesn't totally go away.Sometimes I'll also go into the cobra yoga pose, which is probably good because of the compression. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-21542744974828738302015-03-08T15:05:17.461-04:002015-03-08T15:05:17.461-04:00I would never advocate wearing a corset so tightly...I would never advocate wearing a corset so tightly that it cuts off blood flow, and in fact when I do wear one I can breath comfortably from my belly, so it's quite "loose" by tight-lacing corset standards. As such I don't believe any of my pain relief was/is caused by cutting off nerve endings or blood flow or muscle tendons; in fact, I can stick my hand between my corset and abdomen, so clearly it's not tight enough to do any of those things. And as you pointed out, the Spanx-like garments I recommended in this post cause no damage or danger whatsoever.

Thanks for all the warnings, though.Jenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11888187687405622408noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-35410290229298515592015-03-08T11:32:53.908-04:002015-03-08T11:32:53.908-04:00EPIBOT: Hi, this response is in answer to your que...EPIBOT: Hi, this response is in answer to your question:"Does wearing a corset cure cramps": As a living historian who give living history talks on the side effects of wearing a corset and who has completed thousands of hours of well documented medical research. I can honestly say, no a corset does not cure cramps in fact wearing a corset can cause endometriosis, polycystic cysts and an endometrioma from continual use. The sledgehammer of pain you felt once you loosened your corset isn't sever cramps but severe bruising of every muscle and nerve in the thoracic region caused by blood flow being cut off to the thoracic region from restriction. Along with every muscle, nerve and tendon attached to the spinal column being pulled out of place, not mention the spinal column itself also being pulled out of place and pressing on the spinal cord restricting blood flow and causing severe bruising. Along with all of the internal organs being shoved forcefully upward and severely bruised at the same time which is the real cause of the sledgehammer of pain that you felt.

Any garment such as spanks which don't restrict blow flow to the muscles, nerves and tendons nor bruise muscles, nerves, and tendons, nor pull the spinal column out of place nor bruise the spinal cord, nor force the internal organs upward, nor bruise the internal organs is a better choice than wearing a corset.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-39669106843462306672013-12-08T20:33:18.836-05:002013-12-08T20:33:18.836-05:00Here is another vote for menstrual cups! I used to have a really heavy flow (even during the night, I had to set an alarm to wake me up every couple hours to change an overnight pad) and terrible cramps (which often kept me out of school and work, and once the pain was so bad I even became delirious). I switched to a cup, and slowly the heaviness of my periods decreased (down to emptying the cup every four hours at night) and the pain was lessened (to rarely missing school and work), but I was still using a regular pad to as backup. Then I got to the point where I figured it would be enough to just us a folded handkerchief in place of a pad/liner. Suddenly the pain was minimal aching and easily controlled by regular dosing with ibuprofen. I no longer need to get up in the night to empty my cup AT ALL.

I can't attribute these changes to anything else except no longer using bleached, commercial pad/liners at all. My weight, diet, exercise level, etc. have all remained consistent. Switching from commercial pad/liners to the cup and clean cloth liners (just for a few drips from changing out the cup; there is no leaking anymore now that my flow is decreased) has completely changed how my period affects my life.

Cups are so safe. There has never been a single case of toxic shock syndrome. You can wear them in the early and late stages of your period without worrying about being dried out and having to -tug- out a stuck tampon. You can practice inserting it in the shower before your period starts.

They take a little practice so that you know they have a good seal. You will know it is good because the cup will not have any folds in it while it is inside you, and it will be able to spin in place freely. There is a learning curve, but it is so worth it.

I use a small DivaCup. I have not tried any other brands, so I cannot compare them. My only suggestion in choosing a cup would be to get one that is silicone, not natural rubber. Rubber degrades over time in ways that silicone does not.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-44004331544044638272013-08-10T04:41:37.768-04:002013-08-10T04:41:37.768-04:00I'm late to the conversation but no one has ye...I'm late to the conversation but no one has yet mentioned raspberry leaf tea for cramps. It is a natural source of calcium-magnesium, and for me works in about 20 minutes. It's been a miracle and free if you have raspberry bushes around. Just dry the leaves and steep a tea from them for about 5 mins. (or just buy it from a health food shop).

For menstrual migraines, coffee can sometimes help too.

Great idea about compression. Another primrose oil user :D I use that and vitex (or chaste berry) together so I'm not a crazy person who cries her eyes out one minute and is laughing the next then seriously angry after. I think my hubby is most grateful that I take those lol. I take the EPO for the PMS type symptoms and the vitex for the ones that persist into my period (at first I was only taking vitex and it worked for the crazies a few days into my period but not the PMS part). I wish it would work for my period acne like it does for you, but what it does work for for me is good too :)

If you haven't been there yet http://www.vitacost.com/ has both the EPO and vitex and lots lots more, and I find they're usually cheaper than the grocery or supplement stores (or at least they are cheaper than the ones near me). Plus their customer service is amazing (to me that is SO important when I'm shopping online).Monicanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-57492384705502820712013-06-01T00:42:07.538-04:002013-06-01T00:42:07.538-04:00I've been reading a lot of people talking abou...I've been reading a lot of people talking about the suction issues with the Diva Cup, and I know the design is a little different, but I have never had suction problems with Instead Softcups. Also, since I was going out shopping I got magnesium, and I have to say, the combination of those two, this was probably my best period in MONTHS. No joke. I am already sending this post to all my female friends and telling them it works.

Also, to jump on the cup bandwagon- I'm not in the Diva Cup group, but I have been using Instead Cups for about 7 years now. They have changed my period life so much I can't even describe. Like everyone else has said, yes, they take getting used to. Once you are used to it it is so much better (and healthier, or at least I think so). No more over-drying from pads, and no worry of TSS from tampons. No worry of the horrific leaking from pads, it is so great. :)

Thank you so so so much for posting about this, I appreciate it more than I can really express. Also, for those having trouble with PMS/emotional problems, do some looking into Vitex Fruit (chaste berry) and/or Evening Primrose Oil. It has helped me SO much. No more randomly crying and freaking out everyone around me lol.Monicanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-13422097545372953272013-05-31T15:29:05.130-04:002013-05-31T15:29:05.130-04:00Impeccable timing with this, thank you very kindly...Impeccable timing with this, thank you very kindly! I have missed work. I have lain on the bathroom floor in pain. Switching from pads (I could never wear tampons - too painful) to a menstrual cup (I have a Divacup) and folded handkerchiefs as a backup has worked wonders. I have heard that some of the treatments of the cotton and plastic in tampons and disposable pads make cramps worse. That has been consistent with my experience. Since I have switched, my periods have gotten lighter and my cramps are just discomfort, not crying and wanting to die.

1) Tell her to drink a LOT of water when her period is coming up (and during it).
2) Start her on ibuprofen the night before, if you can. I start out with two pills as soon as I wake up, then one every hour or two after. If she can take a little caffeine with them (tea, for instance), that will strengthen the effect of the medication.
3) Get her a menstrual cup with REUSABLE pads as backup. Starting the menstrual cup helped, but it wasn't until I started using folded handkerchiefs instead of commercial pads as backup that my cramps cut way back.
4) If she tends to get a little constipated, have her eat raisins during her period. They loosen stool and make it easier to pass.

One thing that none of the menstrual cup advocates has mentioned yet (so far as I have seen) is that there is a learning curve. It can take a while practicing before you can consistently get a good seal. It is worth the practice, though, and it will not dry you out like a tampon. Also, when my period is heaviest, I must get up at night every three hours to empty it or it will leak. Most people can go all night, though.

I had been wearing camisoles for the way they keep my belly warm and not tensing up, but I didn't realize that the compression was probably helping, too. I am going to try this corset thing.

***Jen, I don't know if everyone reads the comments. Would you consider doing a full post on menstrual cups? The things have been around for decades, but so few women know about them. My mother had never heard of them. She said she wished she had known before she had her bits ripped out. I first learned of them on the internet years ago when I was looking for ways to make my cramps ease a little.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-34347921470967746532013-05-27T12:00:59.471-04:002013-05-27T12:00:59.471-04:00Ear buzzing can be a sign of asprin overdose. It reduces inflammation which is one of the significant causes of cramps, headaches, some acne, and can also help reduce some signs of aging. You can get it in gel caps at most grocery/drug stores in the supplement section and I've had a lot of success taking 1 gel cap in the morning and at night.

I went off birth control a few years ago and suffered from really heavy cramps and awful hormonal acne once the hormones cleared my system but it has been soooo much better since I started taking EPO. It does need to be taken fairly regularly to be effective - if I take it sporadically for a couple of days I don't notice much of a difference when my period rolls around but cold turkey for a week will have an effect. When I had severe post-partum depression-bordering on psychosis (Land-o-the-TMI here we come) the standard anti-crazy meds the pshrink put me on gave me such severe diarrhea I narrowly avoided hospitalization for dehydration. The competing company's product, on the other hand, worked. Micro-chemistry, the individual biochemistry of individuals based on their specific body chemistries is a reality, folks. The *last* thing any of us want to do is demonize the very companies that are highly motivated to develop, test, and bring to market the wide varities of pharmaceuticals that offer different individuals different options. My husband and dad are alive today because of the variation in options for heart-disease sufferers (each uses different meds) that killed their dads at an early age. If I ever meet that much abused "Big Pharma" I will give him/her a big fat kiss.

That said: Drugs interact with *each other* as well as with your body. Basic formula: Diuretic drug A has A diuresis effect. Painkiller drug B has painkiller effect. But you cannot assume that if you take Drug A with Drug be you will get effect A + B. You might. But you'll also get effect C. Which may or may not be want you want. Play safe with your med combos folks! The Overgrown Hobbithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09806927514541692971noreply@blogger.com
