Solder flows with heat. You can stop short if you think a complete seal will be a problem. I don't think it will although it may pressurize your penny beads. For buttons you can also solder the rings into the back of the buttons with the split portion in the solder against the penny. Viola! No seam. Instead of a toothpick use a nail across the back of the domed penny to suspend the ring in the proper place. Solder for sweating pipe fittings is lead free and melts much sooner than zinc/copper pennies. Great ideas!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-87066450870754134472012-02-13T18:58:36.380-05:002012-02-13T18:58:36.380-05:00Neat idea. I worked in a plant that made car parts and we had to make 'washers' out of a material called shim stock, and the way we made them was we used a special punch and a two piece precision block that sandwiched the thin shim.
You seperate the two parts of the block, insert the shim(BE CAREFUL, this can actually cut your fingers off if you keep them in a hole then slide a thin piece of metal through like a guillotine), push the top half of the block back down and put the punch in the proper hole and smack it with a hammer. This would cut a perfectly round slug of shim out of the sheet of stock.
If you were to get one of these punches you could get copper sheet that's thin and make the doming a lot easier to do, or you could use old aluminum siding and cut slugs or many other materials to make your buttons or whatnot out of. I just wanted you to know about this machinist's tool that many have never heard of. There are 2 dowel pins in the block to keep it perfectly aligned which also makes it a bit of a pain to seperate and 2 bolts in it to keep the halves from coming apart totally but they will come apart about a quarter of an inch which is way more than you will ever need. I would think that the punch is relatively expensive but you can literally cut thousands and thousands of prefectly round slugs for your crafts. The shim that I cut is very hard and I cut probably a thousand shims with it and it was not harmed at all. It will cut 9 different sized holes from 1/4 inch to 1-1/8 inches in diameter, quite a range for doming projects.

I hope this is something that you can use and not just a bunch of useless information for you.Jack E.
