The rest is MD throughout the day.
I'm lucky to have been Blessed with a fast metabolism and still, even after 12 yrs in a wheelchair I still don't have a "gut" over my belt. I have started to notice memory issues...lost words and forgetting small things.
I have gone up to four days without a Dew, without headaches. But, I Still want to Quit the Dew. As long as I can remember it has been one diet soda or another. Twenty five years ago it was Tab then diet Dr. Pepper and diet Pepsi. Then along came Diet Mt Dew! From then on my drinking it got worse and worse. You described me to a tee. Especially the missing words. I am a writer and started noticing I coundn't find the word I was looking for and would substitute. I knew the word existed, I just couldn't remember it. Also started forgetting how to spell, passwords, where I was going, what I was doing sometimes. Heart palpations, insulin resistance/diabetes (even without a weight problem),balance got bad and started having kidney infections.
Read about memory loss from aspartame, how diet soda won't let your bones asorb calcium properly, and about some aborted baby particulate they use as a flavor enhancer (OMG) and THAT finally did it.
I hope I am not too late to reverse the effects of what I have done to myself. And I had NO idea
years ago that anything was unsafe.
Wishing all of you the best.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-50977602218372795032012-10-25T05:08:24.306-04:002012-10-25T05:08:24.306-04:00I wish I could get mine to stop drinking that stuf...I wish I could get mine to stop drinking that stuff. Those "palpitations" were probably premature ventricular contractions (PVC's), and they're not bad if they're infrequent. If you get a run of them in a row, we health professionals start to get nervous, and look around for the closest crash cart, *just in case*, ya know? If it goes on for a long time, that's called Ventricular Tachycardia, and well, we do more than look for the cart at that point. (FYI, though, codes are actually pretty boring unlike on TV. Also, George Clooney has yet to show up at one I've been to.) It's kind of a fad diety thing, but I did one (everyone should do at least one fad diet) and it totally broke my caffeine addiction - no migraines or anything. I can't say it had any other benefits and I didn't ever expect to give up caffeine. I actually thought I would go right back to drinking coffee after the cleanse, but I didn't like it any more! It was the best thing I have done in a long time. No more pre-coffee haze. I did the Martha's Vineyard Detox, but I'm sure they are all the same. Have him try some Mio, plain Mio (not the energy or tea, just the plain stuff) in his water to help with the transition.
My husband went through the same thing with the memory problems. He would say a word that was similar in sylables and start with the same sound, but be the wrong word. Lots of stress in the marraige caused by that. As he eased off the Dew, it became easier to understand him and the memory issues didn't happen as much. He used to insist that something was said or not said and be wrong. I can tell now when he has one at work because he forgets simple things in the evening and uses wrong words again.
It took about a month after the last few Dews to get his memory back. A week or so if he has one now. It was probably a full year after he was off it (only 2-3 years ago now) that his brain stopped working against him for good (unless he has one). He drinks close to 2 gallons of water a day though and is overweight but healthy.
Anyway... good job on the big step and good luck keeping it. (True Lime and True Orange also exist, but I haven't tried them.) True Lemon is crystallized lemon in a packet the size and shape of a Sweet 'n' Low. It *does* have some additives (citric acid, lemon oil, lemon juice, ascorbic acid (vitamin c), and organic evaporated can juice) and it contains soy, but--as long as John's good with those things--I highly recommend it to give water or seltzer a little kick.Lady Acenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-72756692986242342892012-06-15T10:16:32.724-04:002012-06-15T10:16:32.724-04:00I have a ton of issues health wise. Well my mother and I scoffed and laughed. Finally, we stopped consuming diet coke and other products. Now, when I have even a little of this chemical my body aches and my RA flares. I know so many people who are addicted to various sodas (though I'm pretty sure Mountain Dew is among the worst) and drink two or more 2-liter bottles a day of their drug of choice. I love soda (Coke!!), but I try desperately not to drink it that often, which honestly averages out to four or five times a week. My first step was to stop buying sodas at the grocery (which I accomplished), and my next will be to start ordering unsweetened ice tea in place of soda. For now, I'm only allowing myself to drink soda if I "dine" out. It's hard. And cutting it out sucks. On the plus side, it sounds like we'll all have more brain cells should we beat our sugar addictions. First, congratulations to John and thanks to you for posting!

I have two kids with ADHD and I have had to learn about food additives. So much pretty poison! (Even cake!) We try to restrict the kids from foods with dyes (and artificial flavors, preservatives, etc.) because they get enough from school and parties. I've seen my daughter "get her monster on" for three days after we let her have one ring pop from a piñata. We've seen angel-to-meltdown from two Sweetarts. Have you tried to find kids' cold medicine without flavoring? Even some of the prescription meds have dyes! I agree that all pills can't be white, but use natural colors!

From the way food is grown, fed, raised, and processed, there's little wonder we have skyrocketing issues with autism, ADHD, and other neurological disorders.
