I remember having to write a "literature letter" to my teacher and told him pretty much every plot detail and then some, and he said that I "didn't understand it" because my letter was 3 pages long. Someone else wrote a 1/4 of a page and apparently that was enough. I also told him in the letter that there were 1 or 2 mentions of "curse words" and the book was never seen in the classroom library again. Mind you, I'm going into 8th grade now, so I don't think that's an issue anymore.Natalienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-51686843249303167782012-06-21T14:26:53.290-04:002012-06-21T14:26:53.290-04:00I just found a geeky summer book list here. The review says that Soulless by Gail Carriger is the beginning of a five book series. They call it a steampunk paranormal romance (vampires and werewolves in Victorian England). I don't know if you've heard of it (and I haven't read it yet so I don't know how good it is) but it seems right up your alley!Leahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01902946375628652749noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-80016429991381685392012-06-18T19:50:08.911-04:002012-06-18T19:50:08.911-04:00I saw one other person recommend The Giver by Lois...I saw one other person recommend The Giver by Lois Lowry. There were some slow bits I had to force my way through, especially in "Eon", but the story and world in them were wonderful!

"Across the Universe" by Beth Revis. If you haven't read it yet, YOU SHOULD. I bought this book on my Kindle at random because it involved romance and space (two of my favorite things!), and I fell in love with the book. When I found out it would be a trilogy, I FLIPPED OUT, and eagerly read it's sequel "A Million Suns" in 2 hours the day it came out, the last book should be released Jan. 2013.

I'm sure most people reading this will have already read "Howl's Moving Castle" by Diane Wynne Jones, but for you all who haven't...I weep for you. Please go read it. You don't know what you are missing out on.

And I am with everyone who recommends "The Forest of Hands and Teeth" and both of it's sequels. All three had a darker, more grim tone to it than a lot of the more popular YA books today had. That's one of those trilogies that loves to take your heart and shred it into little pieces, but you love it anyway. :(

Anyway, that's my two cents on great reads! Happy reading everyone :)TheGakinatornoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-75358582693206570922012-05-09T13:45:55.740-04:002012-05-09T13:45:55.740-04:00Ack! Y...OK, Jen, I think you might be my book soulmate. YA Fantasy is seriously my favorite genre. I'll read anything fantasy, but YA has a special place in my heart.

Someone else posted about Graceling (by Kristen Cashore) But I can't not mention it, because it's probably my favorite book. Fire is a (sort-of) prequel, and Bitterblue is a sequel.

I also want to mention books of Pellinor: The Naming, The Riddle, The Crow, and The Singing. I've read each of these books 3 times. Female lead, orphan, undiscovered magic, fighting an evil force so powerful there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of hope, and music.

Eon and Eona by Allison Goodman are also excellent books based on Chinese zodiac mythology and about girl pretending to be a boy. (Has a lot of really great things to say about gender as well)

The Faerie Wars Chronicles (4 books) by Herbie Brennan are about a boy in modern england who gets sucked into the faerie realm and makes friends with the prince and princess. Very action packed.

You'll probably also enjoy Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer, about a boy genius who discovers the modern day hidden civilization of faeries.

If you don't know about Kingdom Keepers I'm ashamed for you, as it is both YA fantasy and DISNEY.

The Farsala trilogy is also good. Fall of a Kingdom, Rise of a Hero, Forging the Sword. An ever growing empire comes knocking on the doors of a feudal nation, and the story follows three young people who change the fate of the kingdom.

And finally, even though it isn't true YA Fantasy, Brandon Sanderson is probably my favorite author. Elantris is an excellent solo novel, as is Warbreaker, and the Mistborn trilogy may be the best trilogy I have ever read.

So:
Graceling by Kristen Cashore
Pellinor by Allison Croggon
Eon/Eona by Allison Goodman
Faerie Wars by Herbie Brennan
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson
Farsala trilogy by Hilari Bell
and anything by Brandon SandersonDulcetDiscordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03859268302466528204noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-55926099269810861512012-05-05T01:38:15.285-04:002012-05-05T01:38:15.285-04:00Melina Marchetta - she's an Australia author, ...Melina Marchetta - she's an Australia author, and I heartily recommend everything she's written.
