I...Hello there all! It is in-fact me, bryden :)
I'm currently 17 about to turn 18 and today was my last day of my senior year of high-school.
The reason I am writing here is to thank you ALL and thank epbot for this very lovely story. Back when I did this costume I was 6 and didn't know what the internet was XD so I didn't even know this existed. But my mom just gave me this giant book as a graduation present with the story and every single one of these comments. And I have just read every single one.
It moved me to tears seeing all of your nice and encouraging comments, if I could've understood this 12 years ago it would've made me feel so empowered! It's moved me to tears today and I thank every one of you for supporting me when I was just a little trekkie getting into started for the first time.
Now you will be happy to know I've seen every episode of every series, including yhe newest ones, all of star-gate SG1 like 3 times over, most of star wars (I'm working on it) and continue to use star trek as my comfort show if I'm ever sick or anxious.
Also, SPOCK HIMSELF COMMENTED ON THIS?? AND IM JUST NOW FINDING OUT???? WHAT???
Tehe thanks you guys :) Bryden :)noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-60361512964369640872015-02-28T08:49:06.553-05:002015-02-28T08:49:06.553-05:00Any other costume choice would be illogical! You helped spread the word of Star Trek to many by wearing the costume, and although it may take some a few tears to see the movies, they will remember you!! Also, in 1978, I dressed as Gandalf for Halloween, with a long beard and wizard hat and robe and staff. You couldn't have chosen a better costume or a better character to look up to. The essence of Star Trek was to showcase the diversity of life, and that means interests as well. Be glad that you brought Spock to the attention of the kids who did not know him or the series, as they were missing out on a phenomenon and a mindset that, in truth, can be life-changing. May I just say that your costume is q...Dear Bryden,
May I just say that your costume is quite possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen. Honestly.
Also, I understand exactly what you went through at school. Last year our school had a "nerd day." Most people just wore glasses and suspenders and stuff, but being pretty much the quintessential nerd normally, I decided to dress as Captain Kirk (I prefer Mr. Spock, but I didn't have a blue shirt handy). People made fun of me all day. Teasing is something I'm used to, but not this much all day. I was almost considering faking sick so my mom could take me home.
But then something awesome happened. I ran into ( as in, literally collided with) the Homecoming King (a.k.a. the most popular and well-known jock in school). And as I was scurrying away in extreme embarrassment, he said, in a very genuine tone, "Great costume! I'm more of a Star Wars fan myself, but it's cool that a girl has the guts to be Captain Kirk." That brief conversation gave me the strength to keep going that day, and has helped me to be a proud geek since.
So Bryden, never stop being you and letting your geek flag fly. Even when it feels like no one understands you, you'll find support in the most unexpected of places.
Live Long and Prosper,
Meredith
P.S. Give your mom a big hug for immediately being supportive with your idea. It took me a week to convince my mom to help me with my costume because she thought it was a little "weird."Meredithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14734577794245537637noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1724594058209899258.post-88030568200048483492012-01-08T14:55:40.959-05:002012-01-08T14:55:40.959-05:00Bryden, you're one cool kid! I dressed up like Shrek, but no one knew who I was, and I got made fun of because I had to piece together my costume. Now, Shrek is one of the most recognizable characters out there.

I know that being a Nerd is not always the easiest road to walk down, but it is the most fun! It may take a while to learn this, but reveling in your geek-dom will be the best decision you will ever make.

Throughout much of Junior High and High School, I spent a large part of my time trying to act how other kids wanted me to act. (By the way - don't do this. None of those kids actually know what "cool" is and there is no way to do anything "right" by the standards of Junior and Senior High Schoolers.) I was miserable, and it didn't make me any "cooler" in anyone's eyes. Also, because I was so set on not being associated with being a nerd, I refused to see that a girl was interested in me because she had seen that I WAS interested in Science Fiction and Anime.

After 5 years of trying to cover up who I really was, I finally just decided to be nerdy, and I was so much happier for it. The girl who was interested in me was also a nerd, and she and I have now been together for 7 years and are thinking about getting married - and having a Star Wars themed wedding.

The life of a nerd is a fun one, and your mom has done a fantastic job by introducing you to Star Trek at your age. I only recently had a friend guide me through all the best episodes, and I'm 24.

I would encourage you to go to your local library and ask if there is a youth group based around Comic Books, Anime or Science Fiction. My library had one, and having a group of kids to interact with who shared my passion for Science Fiction and Adventure was very rewarding.

Also, you might want to check out www.cosplay.com and ask your mom if you can post pictures of your Spock costume there. I'm sure you'll have plenty of people tell you how great you did!

Although your mom is a Trekkie, make sure she has you watch the original Star Wars trilogy as well. Important viewing for any aspiring nerd. I was Vulcan for Halloween this year too....Bryden!
I was Vulcan for Halloween this year too. My husband and I love The Next Generation the most so we made costumes from that show.
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays because its the day you get to dress up as whoever you want no matter how nerdy.
When I was six I wanted to be The Riddler from Batman and even though I'm a girl and the Riddler is a boy I have a super cool mom just like you who supported my super cool choice and helped make it possible. When I went to school there were a couple of girls in princess outfits who made fun of me for not being a princess like them, but there were even more people (all the boys and teachers) who knew just how cool of a character I had chosen to be.
And even if no one had liked it, I had a really fun time playing Batman with my brother in our costumes. And that is what being a nerd is all about- knowing what you love to geek out about and finding the people that love that geeky thing too, and sharing your geekyness together. And the more you show of your nerdyness and stop worrying about what people think the more people you'll find that love that same geek thing too!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
