10 Crazy Cute Purses For Your Inner Toddler Grandma

I'm really falling for all the quirky novelty purses out there, you guys.

First it was the T-Rex purse by Kate Spade:

"Rawr."

But even on sale (WAIT IT'S ON SALE??) it's like $227, and the most I've ever spent on a purse is... let's see... maybe $30?

Then I fell into the Betsey Johnson Wonderland of novelty purses:

SO MUCH PRETTY.

But while not as pricey as Kate Spade, still kinda pricey, you know? Especially for something that's not an everyday bag.

Which is how I ended up stalking Amazon for crazy cute bags that were mega cheap - or at least under my $30 mark - that still had decent reviews. And I actually found some!

Plus, this could totally be my everyday bag:

Happy rainbow clouds go with everything, right?

Any of you Dizgeeks want to go 'bounding as a Dole Whip?
Because I have JUST THE BAG FOR IT:

Not digging the chain strap (how is that comfortable?), but at least that's easy to replace.

In fact, after a while I noticed chain straps are everywhere:

Unicorn Tears Cross Body Bag, $22 (Also comes in pink)

But for a purse shaped like a Big Gulp of Unicorn tears? I think we can let it slide.

(A lot of these bags are bigger than they look, btw. If you click through to the listings you can see better size references.)

Here's one Ron Swanson would love:

All it needs is this bacon wallet.

I'm also loving that a lot of these have free shipping. If you have Amazon Prime like I do, then I think most of them ship free. Talk about the cherry on top of your cupcake purse:

Disclaimer: This cupcake bag is EVERYWHERE, by lots of different sellers, but that link has lots of good reviews. (I also found the purse for only $6 here on BangGood, which is where I bought my giant cat head bag, if you want to take a chance.)

For you Space Geeks:

Another chain strap - harrumph - but how cute would this be with a galaxy print dress?
You know, like this one I bought last month? :D

(The sizes run small - and the material feels like a bathing suit? - but this dress is super pretty and comfy, guys. And only $14!)

I've seen this next bag in a specialty store here in Orlando for $60 - and seriously considered getting it for my chicken-loving sister-in-law - so I was pretty psyched to find it online for less than half that price:

It's really roomy inside and made of flexible rubber. Plus it's, you know, HILARIOUS.
(Anne-Marie, if this looks familiar come your next birthday, try to act surprised, k?)

This next one isn't exactly "cute," but dang is it cool:

I love the brass, and the clam shell design. It'd be perfect for Pirates-bounding, or just strutting your inner Goth.

And finally, of all the sweet purses I've found so far, I think this may be the sweetest:

If pink's not your thing, there's also a Lemonade!

It's a lot bigger than you'd expect, right?

I'm sure the straw must be super snaggy, but to me, that long vinyl strap makes up for it.

Which is your favorite? And what did I miss? Share your favorite novelty/shaped bag links in the comments - bonus points if they're under $30. I know Etsy is a treasure trove of handmade cuties, too, but I haven't dived in over there yet, so feel free to suggest some stores to get me started!

  3. Ahhh! These are all so cool. But I have to admit my heart keeps going back to the details of the Kate Spade purse. You'd think if one of the straps were going to come off the tip of his nose they could have made it look like it was pierced. Just sayin'... ;)

  4. To go with your galaxy theme... if you like stars and constellations, Think Geek has a light up twirly skirt that looks cool with lights on *and* off: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/jhsu/?srp=7

Some are geeky (TARDIS, dalek, R2D2), some are just cool or cute or insane (hot air baloon, octopus, violin, yellow submarine)

  8. I have this rocket one, it's my favourite! It was about £15 when I got it. I'm not sure where you'd still find it now.

I've also seen some awesome ones shaped like unicorns, castles and shooting stars!

  9. Two words: Sleepyville Critters! They have the cutest bags and are often on sale on Zulily!

  10. How did you not find Judith Leiber's purses? Especially her hot air balloon ones? lol Also of note, her cinderella carriage purse... Though I think they might be spendier than Kate Spade...

    1. Yes! She made the minaudiere famous! Everyone on the red carpet was carrying them a few years ago.

    2. I recently got to see an exhibit of her purses along with her husbands paintings. And you aren't kidding, they tend to go for over $5,000 each.

  11. I have this one. I absolutely love it! It's bigger than it looks, but the opening is a bit tight. I feel likes it keeps things safer. I can't vouch for the shop, cuz I bought mine ages ago, but you can look for 'jump bags' if you don't trust that shop.

  13. The Skull one may be good to carry your stuff if you are cosplaying as a Death Eater too. :)

  14. Eeeee I own that exact galaxy dress too Jen! I feel quite cool knowing you own it. I am so going to buy the planet bag (if they'll ship to the UK), this will be a fantastic outfit.

  15. My daughter loves pineapples, so I might have to get that one for her.

  16. I have that exact rubber chicken purse, and it's definitely bigger than it looks. I love the strange looks people give me when I carry it too! :)

  17. This normally isn't under $30, but right now The Sprite Bag on sale at Think Geek: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/1df0/

I have this in white, and I get a lot of compliments on it. People think it's either Zelda or Minecraft, but I think it's just generic sprites. Mine is over 2 years old and over the past couple of months is starting to show major wear and needs replacing, but before that it looked great. There's a wristlet with the same design too (I have that in black) http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/inqv/.

    1. Oh, I didn't need to know that the Sprite Bag was on sale. I got the wristlet a little while ago and get so many compliments on it. It's lovely. Hmmm...maybe I do need another purse.... :)

  18. I totally own one of Betsy's phone purses! The handset is actually functional too it plugs into your cell and you can talk on it! I get more compliments when I carry it than with literally any other item I have ever owned. Mine is black and white stripes with a pink rhinestone phone :)

  19. So many fun purses! I have seen the chicken one before ( Im a crazy chicken momma lol, we have about 50 in our flock) and it cracks me up every time. I am not surprised your dress ran small as thats a reseller version of a BlackMilk clothing dress. Theirs are nylon amd run true, I just knew the photo off sight. Im glad it came in and was still cute!

  20. They don't fall under the $30 mark, but I love the Loungefly dome purses. I have R2D2. It is my one and only purse and I carry it every day that I can't wear jeans, as women's dress pants rarely have functional pockets.

  21. The space dress has Peter Dinklage in my head singing about it.

  22. The chicken is realistic enough in person to require a double take. ...

  23. So I'm a little biased because I work at Charming Charlie, but we do actually have quite a few novelty bags right now, all under $30. Lady bug, taco, ice cream cone, toucan, etc. http://www.charmingcharlie.com/handbags.html

  24. That rainbow cloud handbag! Yessss! Also ya, ick...I don't like chain straps either.

My current fave novelty handbag is a free knitting pattern that I keep meaning to make for myself at some point. I'd probably make the tentacles longer.

  25. That t-rex might just have to be my next handbag. I'm in the market for a new one :D

  26. I love clothes made for that lycra spandex stuff! It hugs without being *too* clingy (if it's not too small anyway), and you can literally smash it into a little ball in your drawer or suitcase with no wrinkling! I have a lot of tops made from it. Saves a ton of space in trips (more room for souvenirs!)

  27. I love love love that planet novelty bag! I think I need that in my life! :D

  28. Jen, you need to get to Ross (or Marshall's, I get them confused) I love Betsey Johnson purses and I have never paid full price for one.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oooh, I go to Ross a lot, but rarely look at the purses. I'll keep an eye out from now on!

    2. I buy most of my purses at Ross/Marshalls/TJMax...they sell Baggallini cheap!

  29. I think I'm partially to blame here by showing you the TRex crossbody at Disney Springs.;) I deeply regret not scooping up a Space Shuttle clutch KSNY released a few years ago (we had one at a sale at work), but I think that Saturn one may help fill the void.

  30. Love these and love the blog! Apropos of not much other than thinking about women and public gaze and all that... can I just ask if anyone else noticed the totally bizarre photoshopping of the (awesome) galaxy dress model?? What... what is happening in between the top of her right hip and her waist? And her wrists look like they are bent at an anatomically impossible angle? Gah! Why??

  31. next project!!

  32. I, too, have the chicken purse! Been toting it for a few years now and sometimes forget that it's not typical to carry around a large rubber chicken. Folks' reactions to it are so awesome and so funny.

  33. Just so you know about that space dress, it's actually a copy of a Black Milk dress. I've no idea what the quality of a dupe like that would be but if you like the style and bright patterns, Black Milk can't be beaten! Their dresses are incredibly high quality and their lycra doesn't lose colour when it stretches which is amazing! They've done some nerdy collections in the past, their Disney stuff is gone (but sometimes pops up on eBay!) but they do currently have some Harry Potter pieces up!

  34. My morbid little heart digs the skull purse. However I wish it was silver instead. That would make more sense to me, bone being white, and have matched my other skull/skeleton jewelry better.

  35. Jen, I highly recommend the brand Sleepyville Critters, which has a sale going on over at Zulily right now. They have foxes, hedgehogs, sloths, AND joyous things such as rocket ships, Game Boys, and mermaids!

  36. My husband just got us into raising chickens... me thinks a chicken purse would be completely fitting. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  37. The planet bag would go awesome with a Mrs Frizzle cosplay outfit.

    ReplyDelete
  38. So adorable! I've been on the hunt for a backpack style purse and after checking out all the Sleepyville Critters purses, I wish they any of them came in backpack style! So cute!

  44. I use this as my everyday purse. I've had it for 2 years (using it almost every day) and it's still as good as new. I originally bought it from thinkgeek.com for $20, but they don't have them any more. (Although they do have many other cute purses.) So far, while a lot of people have commented on its cuteness, nobody has gotten the reference. ;)

  45. I love novelty purses, although I use them primarily as evening bags (because they're never large enough for all the stuff I need to carry around daily).

Have you seen the Death Star purse? I don't know the link protocol but if you search death star purse you'll find it. I LOVE it - it's a big enough size to actually carry some stuff, and it's subtle enough that it takes a few minutes for most people to realize exactly what it is. It's one of my favorite evening bags!

  46. I bought this owl purse from Target.com (and it's on clearance now - EVEN CHEAPER!) and I love it and get tons of compliments when I carry it out and about: https://www.target.com/p/wallflower-women's-crossbody-handbag-with-interior-compartments-and-zipper-closure---chocolate/-/A-51171200 It's relatively well made, it has pockets inside, and, er, OWL.
