Incredible Slo-Mo Video Of The Diagon Alley Dragon Breathing Fire!

The other week John and I had a fantabulous night out at the parks with a reader named Nissa. We dragged her all through Diagon Alley, then clear over to Magic Kingdom for a midnight viewing of the castle and some early morning pizza.

There are definitely some perks to living in Orlando, and that night was pretty much all of them.

Anyhoo, that medication switch I mentioned last time has been kicking my butt since; when I wasn't panicking I was passed out on the couch. So I stopped taking the new stuff (boo), and now I'm human enough to do fun things again - and yes, also work things, but I'll get to those later, John.

For now, pretty photos!

Keep scrolling for the promised video of this; it is SO COOL.

My one Disney shot:
This was taken early last week, so I was happy to see the castle's icy lights still up.

Now back to Diagon Alley:

Leaky Cauldron has the world's best fish & chips - and that's coming from someone who doesn't even LIKE fish & chips that much. Definitely try those or Toad In The Hole, my favorite. (But pass on the new Butterbeer Potted Cream; it's basically thick pudding, and kinda meh.)

For dessert you're better off going to Florean Fortescue's for ice cream. I recommend the Clotted Cream & Sticky Toffee Pudding combo. Or the Butterbeer soft serve.

Dang I'm hungry.

The impossible-to-photograph mermaid skeleton in Knockturn Alley:

Even harder to capture is the Weasley's shop; it's impossibly cramped, always crowded, and filled with so many dizzying angles it's hard to know where to aim your camera. Thanks to my wide angle lens, though, I think I *finally* got one:

See the fireworks in the skylight window?

And a less successful attempt from the bottom of the stairs:

This is my 3rd attempt, but I just can't seem to get the color balance right. All those oranges and reds! GRRR. Any of you photographers out there have advice?

My shot of the Owl Tower caught an interesting lens flare:

Universal's fireworks started just as we were leaving the Alley, and the angle made it look like these buildings were exploding:

Neat, right?

Btw, since I have food on the brain: there's a drink counter in this square, dead ahead, and the Fizzy Orange is amazing. It's a surprisingly quenching vanilla orange drink, but the edge of the cup is crusted with cinnamon sugar, and oohhhh man. So good.

And finally, that amazing Dragon video John captured on his iPhone:

Isn't it beautiful? I love how it has that blue fade in and fade out at the end. Just stunning.

Sorry to be "just" posting so many pictures lately, but I think I'm finally back on track now, so look for more crafts, art, and reviews, coming soon!

  2. Rule 1 of video: Slo-mo makes anything look infinitely cooler. Fire breathing dragons are no exception.

Your White Balance looks pretty spot on in your second picture of the Weasley's workshop. Whether or not it matches what you experienced when you were there, is another question entirely. If you're using Lightroom or similar photo-editing software, try desaturating just the reds or oranges (as opposed to the whole image) to see if that helps.

Alternatively, set your white balance in-camera to one of the presets that looks close. Take a picture of a white piece of paper in the lighting conditions you're using, then take the shot you actually want. When you start editing, color balance off the white piece of paper, then copy-and-paste those settings to the shot you want.

    Hope that helps!

    1. Aha, I'm totally going to try that! Thanks!

    2. alternatively, take your shot of the white paper and then set that as your custom white balance image. you may sill have to tweak a bit later but that will get you most of the way there.

  5. Looooooooooove the dragon video! Ahhhhh, I'm melting!

And I went to Wizarding World for my honeymoon almost six years ago and the husband and I have been trying to figure out when we can make it back. With all the additions, it'll be like a completely new place! Your posts definitely make me vacation-hungry!

  6. Jen, are you stoned? Everything is amazing and you've got the munchies! Okay, so everything IS amazing, but I like thinking of you all blissed out and chillaxed on weed. Oh, you must be trying medical marijuana for your anxiety now. Okay, great idea, and we are going to be getting some hilariously entertaining posts! ;)

Hey, and Nissa? You are one lucky bitch! A night of theme-park hopping and pizza with Jen and John?! I'm pretty sure it doesn't get any better than that.

These photos are stunning, Jen. Every time I see your pics of the parks, I start aching to go, but I have a feeling they're better in photos, for me at least. Really cool slow-mo dragon, too, John!

  7. I'm so sad that we missed you when we were at Universal in November. I too took awesome photos of the dragon at night and during the day, and although the ones from my real camera are still unedited (next up on the list; I had to get through client photos first!), I can't wait to get to them. I'll send you the link so maybe you can enjoy too :) Hopefully next time I'm in Orlando we can all meet up! Your photos are awesome - I didn't get quite as many night time photos of Diagon Alley as I would have liked, but I do love the ones I got of the dragon and of Hogwarts :)

  8. One of my favorite food/drink combos: the chocolate potted cream with warm butterbeer. Like a chocolate butterscotch dream.

  9. I've only seen Diagon Alley during the day so thank you for sharing these stunning night time photos!

  11. These are incredible! I love your wide angle shots
My sister went last week to Universal and she kept sending me text pictures of Diagon Alley. Arg I never felt so excited and jealous at the same time! Waiting for the one in LA to open up in April so I can go!

  12. My boyfriend and I are going to Tampa in April for a week, and since we've never been to Orlando before, we want to spend at least one day there doing touristy stuff. The only problem now is trying to decide between Disney and Hogwarts. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, but I have had people tell me that my childhood was lacking because I never went to Disney. Since we will most likely only have one day in Orlando, my big concern is that we won't get to see all the stuff we want to in whichever park we decide on. Any advice?

    1. Oooh, that's a tough one. In some way I'd almost recommend the Potter areas, because those two CAN be done in one day - whereas Disney is just so much to take in, you'll always feel like you're missing most of it. (Because you are!)

Even if you hit Spring Break crowds, though, you'll still be able to see the Potter parts of Universal (provided you're ok skipping the rest of the park stuff). Just buy a 2-park pass, so you can take the train between the two.

That said, Disney DOES stay open a lot later most of the time, so if you'd prefer pixie dust, just make a list of "must sees" and go for it!

    2. I gotta second Jen here. One day wouldn't be enough for Disney, but you could do a lot at Universal.

    3. I would also suggest that with just one day, Universal is your best bet. Also, I'd recommend springing for their "Express Pass". This is a pass that allows you to skip the lines on most rides and go straight to the front. I don't know if the Harry Potter rides are included or not, but if you want to do anything in addition to Harry Potter, it'll be about the only way you'll be able to do it. You can get more info here: https://www.universalorlando.com/Theme-Park-Tickets/Universal-Express/Express-Passes.aspx#p2p

  13. I went to the Wizarding World last June, and I am ready to go back. Great pictures! I never really saw it after dark, since the park closes right at dusk in the summer!

I'd also second de-saturating the photos of the Weasley's shop just a touch. I did that to mine and they looked more real-to-life to me.

  14. Dang! I was just there in October and you're making me wish I was going back already :) That dragon! I love it and the slo-mo video is fantastic. I spent as much time in the Leaky as possible, but now I'm sad I didn't try the fish and chips. I greatly enjoyed the stew and the breakfast pasty.

I had a lot of issues trying to take pics in WWW. There's so much in there, it's hard to find a focus. I think your pics are lovely and the saturation captures the brightness of it when you're in there.

  16. I used to have that tin duck on a bike when I was a kid! Oh, nostalgia!
Those light fixtures in the Leaky Cauldron are fantabulous.

The pics you posted of the dragon in the past were amazing enough, but add video, and now I'm looking online for the earliest plane ticket to Orlando. Dang it. Thanks, John.

    Glad you're feeling better!

  17. Last time we were at Wizarding World, we got to see the dragon breathing fire through a sunshower - pouring rain and bright sun at the same time, and as nifty a bit of magic as I've ever seen in real life.

That video is awesome, and I love the Owl Tower and Weasley's shop pics!

  18. OK, being an LA-based family, I've been intrigued by most of your Disney posts, but now I've GOT to drag the fam to Orlando. Thank you Jen and John!

  19. I'm perfectly happy with "just" picture posts! Anytime I see a new post come up on my Facebook or blogger feed I HAVE to hop over and see what you are talking about and it is always entertaining or real or funny or hysterical or gut-checking or amaze-balls or some combination of the above. What it boils down to it is you being you and making us feel like we are all your friends and along for the journey....

  20. I'm so happy you're feeling better! Seeing your photos is making me miss the parks so much! Luckily I'm going to be back so soon!

I'm moving to Orlando for 6 months in a few weeks from Australia to do the Disney College Program! I'd love to meet you in the parks sometime if that's something you'd ever consider doing :)

  21. Jen,

My husband says to try white balancing through 1/4 or 1/2 blue or burnt Amber. It'll change the color tones of the light in the room and the image. I think your shots look fab personally. ;)

  22. Thank you for letting the West Coast visit Orlando. I really hope I get to visit one da. (still hoping to do the Disneyland Coast-to-Coast challenge!)

I want to frame the first Weasley Shop picture. Capturing the fireworks makes it perfect.

  23. Ha, I like the idea of fish and chips in Florida - must be a different experience without the traditional British weather (ie, basically chilly, ideally with some form of precipitation)!

  26. Jen, I have to tell you that this post has just given my son the motivation to start reading the first Harry Potter book! He's a sensitive little guy with a big imagination and occasionally has bouts of anxiety. (takes after his mom. sorry about that, little dude.) He tends to be worried about trying new things, and was afraid that he'd have nightmares from reading Harry Potter. I reassured him that he didn't have to read it until he was ready, but I thought he'd handled us reading The Hobbit and 3 of the Narnia books out loud really well, and now we're reading the Alfred Hitchcock Three Investigators series out loud and he's doing great with those. I also suggested that he could just try the first book and see how he does with that, and I would read with him if he wanted. He's got several friends who have read the whole series, and next Halloween our friends are doing a huge Harry Potter theme for their house, so he's wanted to start reading the book, but his anxiety kept getting the better of him.
And then he saw me reading Epbot, saw the photos and the video of the dragon, and wanted to see more. I showed him the other pictures you've taken of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and we chatted some more about non-spoiler parts of the series.
This morning he came out of his room, grabbed The Sorcerer's Stone off the shelf, and read the first chapter before school. And all the way to school he couldn't stop talking about it, and said he can't wait to get home and read some more!
I know this got really long (sorry about that), but I'm just so excited that he's conquered his worry and jumped in! I know he can handle the first couple books (we'll hold off on some of the later books for a bit until I know he's ready), and it's fun to have one more thing to share with him and excite his imagination!

  27. Jen, I love your photos. I've been to Orlando twice mainly with friends to go to Disney World and the last time was 19 years ago. But even though, your Universal already has 'The Wizarding World of Harry Potter' , ours on the West Coast is set to open April 7, 2016 at Universal Hollywood. Hopefully I can get my pass by then and go, it should be funas we've been waiting soo long for this. The dragon video is soooo hot!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. That looks so amazing! Next month I'm going to be at Disney World for the first time ever (hope I'm lucky enough to be able to hang out with you and John!), and now after seeing your pictures I'm already planning my next trip to the U.S. to see Universal (though who knows when I'll be able to put those plans into action)! Clearly I need to move to Florida ;)
